 New York Riptide

Riptide Fall to Mammoth 18-10

February 24, 2024 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
New York Riptide News Release

The New York Riptide traveled to Colorado Friday night to play the Colorado Mammoth. The Mammoth put together their best half of the season during the second half on Friday night to walk away with the 18-10 win over the Riptide. Tyson Gibson was sensational against his former team scoring 4 goals and adding 2 assists for the Mammoth. The Mammoth were able to outscore the Riptide 12-2 in the second half after trailing by two entering halftime. The Riptide will look to regroup after this loss, with their playoff chances still alive. The Mammoth will need to win out the rest of their games, but after a performance like tonight, anything is possible.

The Riptide continued their trend of hot starts to games in this one, building a 4-2 lead on goals from Reilly O'Connor, Larson Sundown, Austin Madronic, and John LaFontaine. The Riptide offense found success early on and matched that output in the second quarter with another four-goal quarter in the second after Connor Kearnan and Jeff Teat both scored a pair of goals.

Coming out of halftime, the Mammoth capitalized on the powerplay twice in the first two minutes of the third quarter, tying the game back up on two Tyson Gibson goals. With 11:49 remaining in the third quarter Kevin Brownell scored in transition to reclaim the lead for the Riptide, but the rest of the game was all Colorado. Eli Mclaughlin and the Mammoth went on a 10-1 run from that point until the end of the game to send the Riptide home with their second consecutive loss. In the fourth quarter, Eli McLaughlin scored a natural hattrick to close out the game for the Mammoth scoring three goals in a minute and 36-second span.

The Schedule does not lighten up for the Riptide as they will travel to Albany for their next game on March 2nd. New York had success against Albany last year, winning each matchup against the Firewolves, but this team has been remolded and a Top 5 team in the NLL the entire season. Jeff Teat is still in sole possession of first place in the NLL in points with 73 in eleven games. Connor Kearnan also eclipsed 50 points for the season in this last game and will need just 21 points this season to set a new career high.
