Lowell, MA- The New England Riptide and the Akron Racers took the field for the second of a four game series on a perfect night at Martin Softball Field. In a well pitched, exciting game the Racers evened the series at one game apiece with a 1-0 win.
Two USA National Team members battled it out in the circle, former member, Danielle Henderson (7-3) for the Riptide and present member, Alicial Hallowell (3-4) for the Racers. Errors cost the Riptide a run in the top of the third as the Racers took a 1-0 lead. Ianeta Lei reached on a ground ball error which cost nothing as it turned out as pinch runner, Sarah Zilles was thrown out trying to steal by Riptide catcher KJ Kelley. When Norelle Dickson's infield squibbler was overthrown to first allowing Dickson to take second, that did cost. Veronica Wootson singled her home for the first run of the game. The Riptide loaded the bases in the bottom of the third an hits by Lisa Iancin and Kelley, but could not score with one out. Iancin was thrown out attempting to score on what might have been a wild pitch. That was as close as the Riptide would get as Hallowell shut them down allowing five hits.
New England and Akron play the third game of the series Sunday at 5:05. It will be Anna Maria College Scholarship night as the college will be awarding two, $5,000 scholarships. The Riptide and Anna Maria College have been raising money all season for the Molly Bish Center located on the Anna Maria campus. Game four, the final home game for the Riptide will be played on Monday at 7:05. The Riptide will be honoring Leominster native and four year Riptide star, Lyndsey Angus.
