Riptide bats still silent- drop second game 2-0

June 1, 2007 - National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) - New England Riptide News Release

Fairfax, VA- The New England Riptide continued to struggle offensively in the beginning of the season as they were shut out for the second time in as many nights, this time 2-0 by the Washington Glory. Sarah Pauly and Desiree Serrano combined to limit the Riptide to only four hits, all singles for the second straight night. Pauly, last night's winning pitcher, started again and pitched three innings while Serrano pitched the last four to pick up the win.

Erica Beach pitched a complete game for the Riptide, but struggled a bit with her control all night. Beach struck out six and allowed six walks, but was able to get out of trouble most of the time. Ironically, none of the walks came back to haunt Beach as all the Glory scoring was done in the third on two homeruns, one by Amber Jackson and the other by Oli Keohohou.

The Riptide had a chance in the top of the seventh when Jackie Pasquerella (two of the Riptide's four hits) singled with one out and Tarrah Beyster hit one to the wall in left field, narrowly missing a homerun. Alex Sutton followed with a similar shot, but both balls fell just short and were caught.

Riptide coach Sharon Drysdale expressed disappointment at the two losses, but not concern. "Hitting is contagious" said Drysdale. "The veterans are going to start hitting soon and meanwhile the rookies have been making good contact and having good at bats. Shanel (Scott) was one for one and had two of the Riptide's three walks. In addition, she stole two bases. Sutton and Carbonatto have both been hitting the ball hard and eventually they will start dropping." Meanwhile the Riptide are going to have to step up soon if they want to get out of Washington with a .500 record. The teams play on Saturday at 7:05 and a Sunday matinee at 3:05. The Riptide travel to Rockford next week before returning home for their opener against Team Venezuela on June 14th.
