New England Riptide News Release

Allentown, PA- The New England Riptide averted a sweep by the Philadelphia force today at Allentown, winning 1-0, behind the efforts of their two top picks from Northwestern this year. Eileen Canney (4-2) pitched a two hit complete game shutout and the lone run of the game came in the top of the third on a one out homerun by Garland Cooper, her first of the year. The last two weekends saw each team win their first three at home, but neither team was able to complete the sweep as they split the home and away series at four wins apeice.

For the third straight game, the Riptide were unable to figure out Margo Pruis (3-1). Pruis has held the Riptide to two runs in the last twenty one innings she faced them. This time, though, Canney was equal to the task, giving up only two singles, three walks and striking out three. Pruis, meanwhile allowed six hits, three walks picking up her first loss of the year. Only one Force runner managed to get to third, that being Kellie Wilkerson in the second. Jackie Pasquerella (2 for 2) saved a run in the sixth with a leaping catch with the speedy Sharonda McDonald on 2nd.

The Riptide will be happy to return home for three consecutive series beginning this week against the Michigan Ice, Team China and the Force. The series with the Ice begins this Wednesday at Martin Softball Field at 7:05.
