RimRockers Headed To Championship Game
March 21, 2005 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Arkansas RimRockers News Release
More than 7,400 RimRocker fans watched in anticipation as the semi-final game of the ABA play offs came down to the final quarter. The Mississippi Stingers arrived in Arkansas with the intentions of removing the number two seed and taking the championship game to Mississippi. Fortunately for Arkansas, the Stingers plan was spoiled, but it took 48 minutes of solid hustle, along with a little sweat and a lot of heart, for the RimRockers to pull out the 117-105 victory.
At tip off when Mississippi took first possession, the Stingers went on a 5-0 scoring run, and the RimRockers were forced to play catch-up while trying to prevent the Stingers from getting out of reach. By the end of the first quarter, the Stingers were only up by two points; 28-26. The second quarter was played much the same way, and by half time, the Stingers were up five points. The RimRockers never owned the lead and were down by as many as 14 points before Kareem Reid's last minute shot set the score 57-52.
The third and fourth quarters of the game were just as intense as the first two and neither team was willing to relent. The RimRockers regrouped and came back from the half-time break to outscore the Stingers 29-23. Then in a fast paced, all-out effort, the RimRockers finished the game outscoring Mississippi 36-25.
Although Todd Day led the team in scoring with 35 points, Reid was the overall game leader with 30 points and a season record 20 assists. Reid, who played all but three minutes of the game, also contributed two steals and four rebounds while going 10 of 11 from the free-throw line. For the Stingers, Chris Sykes led with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Detrick White was responsible for most of the damage done to the RimRockers defensive strategy. He had 23 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, shot 50 percent from the three-point arch and was perfect at the free-throw line making 3 of 3. Fortunately for RimRocker fans across the state, their team survived another tough opponent and will advance to the Championship game on Saturday, March 26 at Alltel Arena.
