Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release

Charlotte Stone Crabs left-hander C.J. Riefenhauser was named the Florida State League's Pitcher of the Week for May 14-20. He is the first Charlotte player to earn the award this season. Riefenhauser registered a pair of victories, one out of the bullpen and the other in a start to capture the honor.

Riefenhauser, 22, picked up a win in relief against the Fort Myers Miracle on May 15. Called into the game with runners at second and third and two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, Riefenhauser needed just three pitches to strike out Michael Gonzales to preserve the tie. Charlotte then rallied for a 3-2 victory.

Just three days later, Riefenhauser made just his second start of the season. He tossed six more blank frames to down the Tampa Yankees at George M. Steinbrenner Field. Riefenhauser allowed just three hits and struck out nine as he moved into a tie for the league lead with six wins. The six scoreless innings lowered Riefenhauser's FSL-best ERA down to 0.70 on the season.

Riefenhauser's 50 strikeouts rank sixth in the FSL and are third in the entire Tampa Bay Rays organization. Only James Shields (56) and David Price (52) for the big club are ahead of Riefenhauser among all Rays pitchers thus far in 2012.

Tampa Bay selected Riefenhauser in the 20th round of the 2010 June Draft out of Chipola Junior College.
