RICHMOND, VA - Richmond took all three points on Saturday night by defeating the visiting Harrisburg City Islanders 2-1. A penalty from Luke Vercollone, and a long free kick from Sascha Görres, was enough to see the Kickers through despite a late goal from Matt Bahner.

Harrisburg's first chance of the game came in the third minute. Forward Clesio Baque found Robbie Derschang making a run to the end-line. Derschang centered a ball to Jose Barril near the penalty spot, and drew a diving save from Richmond keeper Joe Willis. Bahner was quick to follow up the shot, but his effort went well over the bar.

Richmond was on the board two minutes later on a Vercollone penalty. Richmond forward Jason Yeisley drew the foul on a challenge from Harrisburg City defender Coady Andrews. Vercollone did the rest from the spot, and tucked his shot neatly in the left side netting.

Richmond would nearly get their second in the 16th minute on a shot from George Davis IV. Davis IV dispossessed Bahner on the left wing, and carried the ball to the top of the box. Davis IV's shot caught keeper Brian Sylvestre leaning to his left, but the keeper made a kick save.

Richmond would double their lead in the 23rd minute on a free kick from defender Sascha Görres. Görres' effort from around 35 yards out took a deflection off a defender, and crossed up Sylvestre before finding the back of the net.

In the 30th minute, Görres sent a long ball into the box, which found forward Matthew Delicâte behind the defense. Delicâte's header forced Sylvestre to make a save backing up on the goal-line.

Richmond's final chance of the half came in the 38th when Davis IV sent a dangerous ball into the box from the left wing. The cross was headed down by William Yomby to Delicâte near the penalty spot; his subsequent shot brought a diving save from Sylvestre to his right.

Richmond came out firing on all cylinders to begin the second half. Their first chance came in the 55th minute on a Shay Spitz backheel attempt. The movement began with Spitz finding Yeisley down the right. Yeisley played a low cross back into the box, but Spitz couldn't steer the ball on target with his backheel.

On the ensuing goal kick, Davis IV stole the ball from Harrisburg City defender Richie Marquez, and found Delicâte all alone near the center of the box. Delicâte's shot produced Sylvestre's best save of the night, by knocking the ball away at full extension to his left.

In the 60th minute, Delicâte flicked the ball with head over the top of the defense to Spitz, who had timed his run perfectly, and was alone on the keeper. Spitz drew the keeper off his line, and tried to go five-hole, but Sylvestre made another save for the highlight reel with his left leg.

Harrisburg City's first chance of the half came in the 63rd minute on a shot from substitute Morgan Langley. Langley danced around Görres in the box, and forced Willis to make a diving save to his right.

Richmond's final chance at a third came in the 72nd minute. Görres was sprung down the left, and squared one up for substitute Juan Arbelaez at the spot. Arbelaez's shot just missed the target wide left.

Harrisburg City would get one back in the 88th minute on a corner from Derschang. His inswinger, found the head of Bahner and the ball trickled between Willis and a couple Richmond defenders.

The Richmond Kickers return to City Stadium on Monday, July 28 to host Crystal Palace of the world famous Barclay's Premier League. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. A sell out is expected and tickets are on sale now at RichmondKickers.com.
