Richard's hat trick propels Surge to 6-5 win

BILOXI, MS - Matt Zultek's two goals powered the Mississippi Surge to a 3-2 win over the Huntsville Havoc at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum, as the Surge extended their winning streak to six games, their unbeaten streak to 13 games, and their lead in the Southern Professional Hockey League standings to five points.
The Surge jumped out to a 1-0 lead late in the first period when Matt Zultek potted his first goal of the night and 42nd of the season, tapping home a centering feed from Tim Velemirovich for a power-play goal at 18:52.
Mike Carter got Huntsville on the board at 2:27 of the second period, but the Surge answered back in a big way, regaining the lead just 12 seconds later when Mike Richard broke down the right wing, faked Havoc goalie Mark Sibbald to the ice and tucked the puck behind him at 2:39. Matt Zultek extended the Surge lead with his second goal of the game, finding the rebound of Chris Greene's shot and putting it past Sibbald at 8:10. Huntsville drew within one when Mike MacDonald beat Bill Zaniboni on the long side at 16:30 of the second.
That proved to be all the offense that the Surge would need, as Bill Zaniboni and the Surge penalty kill unit stood fast during the third period, with Zaniboni stopping eight shots and Mississippi killed three power plays, including two in the last five minutes, as the Surge held on for the win.
Mississippi was 1-for-4 on the power play, and Zaniboni made 24 saves to earn the win.
The Surge's first annual Pink In The Rink event is this Sunday when the Surge host the Louisiana Ice Gators at 3:00 p.m. The players pink jerseys will be auctioned off 90 minutes after the game at Hard Rock Live inside the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Biloxi, with the proceeds benefiting the Favre 4 Hope Foundation and the Memorial Hospital Foundation.
