Buffalo Bandits News Release
BUFFALO, N.Y. (February 22, 2010)--- The National Lacrosse League today announced that recently retired Buffalo Bandits defenseman Rich Kilgour has been chosen as a member of the 2010 NLL Hall of Fame class.
"You don't play to get into the Hall of Fame, hopefully that comes at the end after you're done. I can't put it into words right now. It's really tough, it was 18 years doing something I loved, it leaves you speechless." replied Kilgour upon learning of his selection.
Kilgour had an 18-year playing career (1992-2009), all with the Buffalo Bandits. At the time of his retirement he had played in 18 of the league's 23 seasons of history. His team's made the playoffs 13 times and won four championships (1992, '93,'96 & 2008). Kilgour played in 200 career regular season games as a defenseman and faceoff man for the Bandits, scoring 317 career points (94 goals, 223 assists). Kilgour served as Bandits captain for twelve seasons from 1998 to 2009.
Kilgour was apart of the 1993 champion Bandits, the only team to go undefeated through the regular season and playoffs (10-0) in league history.
"To be apart of that [1993 championship] was a pretty sweet thing, not to lose a game in a whole year in a professional league. We had most of the best players, the talent was there. It wasn't like we killed everybody; there we're a few one-goal games in there." Kilgour said.
In only his second season in the NLL, Kilgour recorded 10 points (3+7) while adding three goals during the playoffs. "We all came together for a perfect storm that year. We had great veteran leadership, a good core of young guys that went out and played hard. It all added up, not losing a game all year." added Kilgour.
Rich Kilgour joins his brother Darris Kilgour, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2007. "As much as you can play by yourself, you're only going to be as good as your teammates on most nights. We had some great leaders here in the beginning in Derek Keenan, Kevin Alexander and Bob Hamley. I learned a lot from those guys and hopefully I passed it along to the guys I played with later." said Kilgour.
The date and location for the Hall of Fame ceremonies will be announced in the coming days. For more information on the National Lacrosse League Hall of Fame, please visit www.NLLHallofFame.com
