Rhode Island FC Adds Midfielder Clay Holstad

Pawtucket, R.I. - Rhode Island FC announced todayit has signed Clay Holstad for the upcoming 2024 USL Championship season, pending federation and league approval.
The 6-foot-2 defender from Birmingham, Ala. joins RIFC after spending last season with Columbus Crew 2. Holstad signed his first professional contract with Columbus in March 2023 after being selected by the Crew in the Second Round (43rd overall) of the 2023 MLS SuperDraft. Prior to the 2023 MLS NEXT Pro season, Holstadplayed collegiate soccer at the University of Kentucky.
"We are thrilled to bring Clay to Rhode Island," said RIFC Head Coach Khano Smith. "Clay brings athleticism and speed to our defensive core. His versatility and ability to play multiple positions makes him a valuable asset to what we are building."
Holstadappeared in 26 matches, starting in 19 throughout the 2023 MLS NEXT Pro season. The defender scored one goal and created one assist in 1,761 minutes played. Holstadmade his professional debut for Columbus Crew 2 on March 3, 2023, playing 90 minutes in a season-opening win over New York Red Bulls II.
During his time in Lexington, Holstad helped lead the Wildcats to multiple NCAA Tournament appearances and was named to the Sun Belt Conference All-Tournament Team and the NCAA All-Southeast Region Second Team. HolstadGraduated with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering in 2022.
