Rhinos draw even with Battery

Rochester, NY- The Rochester Raging Rhinos and the Charleston Battery played to a 1-1 draw in front of 9,566 soccer fans at Frontier Field tonight.

With both teams looking to get back on the A-League winning track, Charleston and Rochester each battled for control of the midfield early on. The first half of play was controlled offensively by Rochester, where the Rhinos picked up eight corner kicks opportunities. Despite the chances, the team failed to put a ball into the back of the net.

The Rhinos finally capitalized on their offense chances in the secnd half, when forward Corey Woolfolk tucked in a rebound shot from Yari Allnutt to put the Rhinos up 1-0 in the 70th minute.

The Battery answered back in the 81st minute as Ted Chronopoulos knocked in an errant clear by the Rochester defense to tie the score at 1-1.

Both teams continued to have their chances for the go-ahead goal, but could not connect. Battery goaltender Chris Doyle made several key saves as the game clock reached the end of the half. Rhino goalkeper Soren Johnson made a big game-saving stop on Battery forward Greg Simmonds, with less than five minutes remaining to keep the score tied.

With limited offensive opportunities in the double-overtime session, the Rhinos came away with the second 1-1 tie in as many games. The Rhinos outshot the Battery 26-14, with Doyle turning away 14 shots. Johnson ended the game with seven saves.

This was the second time that these two teams have met this week. The Battery defeated the Rhinos 1-0 in US Open Cup play on August 4th in Rochester. The win was the first for Charleston all-time at Frontier Field (1-6-2).
