ROCHESTER, NY - The Rochester Rhinos took on the Portland Timbers at Marina Auto Stadium in front of 6,978 fans. This is the second meeting between the two teams with the Timbers beating the Rhinos 1-0 in April at PGE Park.
The Rhinos began pressuring the Timbers in the 3rd minute of the match. Tyler Rosenlund ran down the left side of the field toward the corner flag. He crossed the ball to Isaac Kissi who got his toe on the ball, but it went wide left, resulting in a goal kick.
Rosenlund gained possession of the ball again on the opposite side of the field in the 15th minute. He passed the ball up to Kissi who was making a run right inside the box. Kissi shot the ball right at the goalkeeper Steve Cronin, keeping the match scoreless.
Rochester did not back down from their scoring opportunities. In the 22ndminute, Kissi controlled the ball in Portland's box and passed it out to Kenold Versailles. Versailles drilled the ball at the goal right outside of the 18 and it hit the back of the net to give the Rhinos the lead.
The Rhinos held the 1-0 lead at halftime restraining Portland to only one shot.
Rochester came out fighting in the second half. In the 46th minute, Kissi drew a foul in box resulting in a penalty kick. Ryan Heins stepped up to take the kick, but Cronin made the save.
The Timbers had their first good opportunity in the 56th minute when Keith Savage took a quick shot outside the 18 trying to catch the goalie off-guard. Neil Kitson dove to his right and got a hand on the ball to keep the score at 1-0
Portland had a chance to tie up the game in stoppage time on a set piece. Rodrigo Lopez took the kick, but a diving Kitson made the save to keep the Timbers shut out.
The Rhinos went on to defeat the Timbers 1-0 to bring their record to 10-5-6. The Timbers go to 7-7-6.
