Rio Grande Valley FC Toros News Release
EDINBURG, Texas - Rio Grande Valley FC (0-0-3, 3 pts) has now drawn all three of their opening matches as Monterey Bay Union FC (1-1-1, 4 pts) gave the Toros a run for their money in a tight contest at H-E-B Park.
RGV FC missed out on an early goal at the 9th minute as the play was blown dead; Ricky Ruiz sent a rifling ground shot into the net, but it was deemed offsides by the referee due to contact with a Toros player who was just off the line, 0-0.
Walmer Martinez saw the clearest chance in the first half for Monterey Bay Union as he found himself on a one-on-one approach against Tyler Deric at the 40-minute mark; Deric closed the angle and forced an off target shot from Martinez to end the danger, 0-0.
Rio Grande Valley managed a good opening half as they shot 4 on target out of 8 total attempts; Monterey Bay was limited to five shots, just one on target as the Toros displayed patience and control in the mid sector.
Alex Dixon caught Tyler Deric way off his line near the midfield on a counterattack play and dribbled past him to create an open net chance for the visiting side, making it 1-0 as they capitalized on a big defensive mishap form the Toros.
Monterey Bay Union was left a man down at the 71-minute mark as Mobi Fehr was issued a second yellow (34', 71') but were not affected in the pressure applied by any means. The visiting side tightened their grip as they forced RGV FC into a battle on the wings and some wide played balls to try and steal the three points on the road.
After some late substitutions brought a fresh pair of legs into the mix for Rio Grande, they were able to pressure enough in the final third to discover the equalizer in the late stages of the match.
Taylor Davila played the hero role on the night as he received a ball just outside the 18-yard box and sent a powerful shot which was redirected enough to sneak past the keeper toward the left end of the goal and sent the home crowd into a frenzy as the match drew at 1-1 in the 92nd minute.
Despite the late heroics which were able to save a final home point before their long road trip, RGV FC were left with a bitter taste by leaving 9 out of 10 shots on target unaccounted for as goals.
