EDINBURG, Texas - Rio Grande Valley FC (5-5-8) defeated Orange County SC (6-9-4) at H-E-B Park with a two-goal spread to claim three important points; Wahab Ackwei and Jonathan Ricketts were the scorers on the night.
The opening half saw both teams test the waters in the attacking thirds as they managed some creativity up front, but the match was notched at zero heading into the first half break. Each team managed four shots, none landing on target in a tightly battled physical match.
Tyler Deric was forced to make a play as Orange County dribbled into the box; Dillon Powers took the shot near goal but was blocked by Deric to end the danger on the play, 0-0.
On a set piece, corner kick try, Wahab Ackwei managed a header in heavy traffic to give Rio Grande Valley the first score of the match. The 69th-minute goal marked his second goal of the campaign, 1-0. Wilmer Cabrera was credited with the assist on the play, as he sent in the cross from corner directly into the center of the box.
Jonathan Ricketts created space just outside the box and sent a rifling shot past a fully stretched Colin Shutler who managed to get a hand on it but was not enough as Ricketts powered in a second goal for RGV FC, 2-0. The goal was his second of the season, Pinzon was credited an assist on the play.
Rio Grande closed out the clean sheet performance in style as they locked in a decisive 2-0 win over Orange County SC; this split the season series between the clubs.
