Knoxville Smokies News Release
Sevierville, TN - Kyle Reynolds hit a three-run home run in the first inning, and the bullpen preserved a one run lead for five innings as the Tennessee Smokies downed the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx by a score of 6-5 on Wednesday night in front of 2,509 fans. With the win, the Smokies kept pace for the 2nd half division title and playoff spot, improving to 24-22 for the second half.
The Smokies got the offense going early on in the contest tonight, thanks largely in part to Reynolds. Jemel Spearman led off the game with a single to left field. After a fielder's choice groundout by Jorge Cortes, Casey McGehee walked to put runners at first and second. Reynolds strode to the plate after a Tyler Colvin pop out and deposited a monster shot over the right field wall to give Tennessee a 3-0 lead.
Tennessee benefited from another three runs in the bottom half of the second to increase their lead over the visiting Diamond Jaxx. After recording two consecutive strikeouts, Diamond Jaxx starting pitcher Travis Chick (4-5) ran into all sorts of trouble. Spearman drilled a home run over the left field wall, his fifth of the season, to give the Smokies a four run lead. After a Cortes two-out single, McGehee smacked a triple off the left center field wall to bring him home. Tyler Colvin then hit another rocket off the left center field wall for back-to-back Smokies triples, and Tennessee had staked a 6-0 lead over West Tennessee.
West Tennessee would not go down quietly however, finally getting to Smokies starting pitcher Mitch Atkins in top of the third. A three-run home run off the bat of Carlton Jimerson got the Diamond Jaxx back into the game, cutting the Smokies lead to 6-4 after three innings. The Diamond Jaxx added another run in the fourth inning to pull to within 6-5.
