The Texas Revolution opened their new home up with a bang Sunday night at Dr Pepper Arena - it just took a little time.
After a scoreless, sluggish first quarter, Texas found a rhythm with a lot of new pieces and ultimately had no trouble handling the Savages 49-14. New quarterback Brandon Crawford threw three touchdowns to three different receivers - Clinton Solomon, Brett Reece and newcomer Jarrel Kelley - to build a 21-0 halftime advantage.
Dallas Cowboy quarterback Dak Prescott was in attendance Sunday night, and was met with a roaring ovation when he found himself on the Dr Pepper screens with Revs General Manager and NFL Hall-of-Fame receiver Tim Brown.
The highlight of the night on the field came late in the second quarter when Thailand Pierce nabbed a ball out of the sky for a one-handed interception. The Revs forced a handful of turnovers and three times stopped the Savages from scoring in the red zone. One of those stops came thanks to Frankie Solomon Jr., who made an acrobatic, last-ditch effort to knock a pass out of the hands of an open receiver before he had a chance to maintain possession.
Darius Fudge, expected to start at running back this year, found the end zone early in the third quarter to build Texas' advantage. He was awarded Player of the Game at the end of the night.
Preston Paulson stuck out defensively, making critical open-field tackles in the first half and forcing a fumble later in the game. Jason Catchings, an all-CIF player last year in Wichita, suffered a shoulder injury in the first quarter but 'expects to play next week'. Quarterback Richard Adkins relieved Crawford in the second half, threw a couple of picks, but had bright spots. Texas hit on all of its seven extra points, led by Dylan Calder's four.
Unfortunately, the team was given incomplete rosters of the NTX Savages and never received a correct, full copy from the coaching staff. A final box score will come later in the week once the team has a chance to review film. This was the only non-league game for the Revolution, who begin CIF competition in Dallas next week against the rival Marshals.
The Revs next home game is Saturday March 17 hosting the Duke City Gladiators - the last team to defeat the Revolution (May 19, 2017) at home. For more information on this game and the season throughout the week, visit www.texasrevs.com.
