Despite the sluggish start, the Amarillo Venom held their own to begin their 2016 season.

However, it is not enough as the Texas Revolution scored in the closing moments to escape the Venom 65-53 on Friday, March 11 at the Allen Event Center in Allen.

Down 59-53 with 42 seconds remaining in the game, Amarillo quarterback Nate Davis fumbled the ball in his own endzone, enabling Texas defensive lineman Neil Wilcox to fall on the ball for the final score.

With the victory, the Revolution (1-0) take the first and only regular season meeting between the two squads.

The Venom (0-1) clawed back from an early 25-point deficit, tying the game early in the final period 46-46 with a 16-point surge in the span of 14 seconds.

Davis orchestrated the comeback, as he connected with wide receiver Greg Jones followed by a fumble recovery by defensive lineman Desmond Raiford in the endzone on the ensuing kickoff. Davis scored on the two-point conversions after the scoring plays.

Another exchange of scores leveled the game at 53-53 with less than six minutes remaining.

Texas had raced out to a 28-3 lead early in the second quarter, with the help of quarterback Robert Kent Jr. finding wide receiver Clinton Solomon twice in the endzone during the scoring run.

The Venom didn't find paydirt until 6:06 remained in the second quarter, where Davis called his own number and scored a touchdown on a five-yard dive. After a Texas touchdown by running back Darius Fudge, Davis fired a 47-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Tommy Curry.

On the ensuing kickoff, kicker Jacob Felton went short, where a leaping Kent McDonald captured the onside kick and gave the Venom another possession with 2:55 remaining until the break.

Davis took advantage, driving the Venom down the field until finding a wide open receiver in Raymond Johnson Jr. in the corner of the endzone.

Texas responded with their own drive in the first half's closing moments, before kicker Richard Hutton's boot went wide left. This sent the Venom and the Revolution into the locker room with a 34-23 Texas advantage.

Curry led Amarillo with 89 yards receiving and a touchdown, followed by Johnson's 41 yards and a touchdown. Davis was 12-for-29 with 162 yards, three touchdowns and one pick.

Texas was led by Kent Jr., who went 20-for-27, tossed for 232 yards and six touchdown passes, while wide receiver Tavarres Williams caught four of those passes. Solomon captured the other two touchdown catches.

The Venom will look to recover at home, with their home opener against the Dodge City Law at 7 p.m. this coming Saturday at Coors Light Field inside the Amarillo Civic Center Complex Cal Farley Coliseum.

Additional Venom notes:

Raymond Johnson Jr. was a jack-of-all-trades against the Revs, tabbing his first kickoff return from 49-yards out in the third quarter. The seasoned veteran also rushed for a two-yard touchdown with 6:50 left in the game.

Dominique Guest led the Venom in rushing, hauling in 39 yards on eight rushing attempts. Guest's longest rush was for 13 yards, attained through pushing back a multitude of Texas defenders.

Quarterback Nate Davis was close behind, hauling in 29 yards in six rushing attempts. This included a crucial third-and-three with seven minutes left, which led to the final Venom score by Johnson Jr.

Dodge City, the Venom's upcoming opponent, defeated San Angelo 33-18 at Foster Communications Coliseum in San Angelo.

The Revolution will host Mesquite at 7 p.m. on Saturday at the Allen Event Center. The Marshals (1-1) upset the Sioux City Bandits, the defending CIF champions, by the score of 27-26 at the Mesquite Arena on March 12.
