Rochester Knighthawks News Release
(Rochester, January 28)... Since their last meeting a lot has changed for the Rochester Knighthawks and the Boston Blazers. Rochester has made five player moves since the first encounter on Saturday, January 22nd, while Boston made two adjustments to its roster.
Rochester Knighthawks Owner and General Manager Curt Styres announced their latest player move, adding defenseman/transition man Holdon Vyse today to the practice squad. Vyse, 22, was drafted in the fourth round (37th overall) in the 2010 NLL Entry Draft by the Buffalo Bandits. In 2010, he was a member of the Oshweken Aces that captured the Nations Cup.
The Six Nations product played Senior "A" ball for Langley and Coquitlam in the Western Lacrosse Association this summer. The defenseman, who can play transition, also recorded 33 points in 11 Senior "B" games for North Shore. In his junior career, he has 29 goals and 68 assists in 96 games with Six Nations. In 70 playoff games, he scored 13 goals and added 34 assists. He was a second team All-Pro in the Junior "A" circuit. He also won four straight Ontario Championships (2004-07) and captured the 2007 Minto Cup. He played his college lacrosse at Onondaga Community College. Holden is the brother of Buffalo's Roger Vyse.
"He played for us all the way through junior and had a tryout with the Bandits," said Styres. "He can play defense and transition, is a hard hitter, and finishes his checks."
On Thursday, Rochester acquired defenseman Rory Glaves from the Edmonton Rush in exchange for forward Scott Evans. The trade was one of four player moves completed by the Knighthawks. Rochester also signed defensemen Scott Campbell, released transition man Ian Crashley and moved defenseman Cody Johnson to the practice squad. Both Glaves and Campbell were added to the active roster.
Rochester and Boston will hit the turf again on Saturday, January 29th at 7:35 p.m. at The Blue Cross Arena. The first 5,000 fans will receive a Knighthawks T-shirt. The game will be broadcast live on The Zone 94.1 FM and www.thezone941.com. For tickets call (585) 454-5335 or go online to knighthawks.net. Before the game, fans can get an autograph from former SU star Sol Bliss.
The game is the second contest in two days for the Blazers, who host the Philadelphia Wings tonight at 7:30 p.m. Boston is 2-2 after suffering back-to-back overtime losses last week. Boston signed 10-year veteran forward Ryan Powell, who adds more firepower to an already potent lineup. With the Edmonton Rush last season, he recorded 51 points (21+30) and to date has 412 career points in 122 games. He is reunited with his brother Casey, who leads the NLL with 16 goals and is tied with teammate Dan Dawson with a league-best 27 points. Dawson also leads the league with 24 assists.
Rochester (2-1) enters the game in search of its first home win after recording its second straight 11-10 overtime road victory. For the first time in team history, Rochester won back-to-back road games in overtime. The 2011 Knighthawks are now one win away from tying the 2005 squad with three OT wins. The 1998 club owns the team record with four overtime games. Last Saturday, Shawn Evans capped a remarkable comeback with a goal 48 seconds into overtime sending the Knighthawks past the Blazers. Shawn Williams led Rochester with seven points (2+5) and was huge down the stretch, scoring two of the goals and assisting on the game's last three goals. Cody Jamieson recorded his second straight hat trick en route to his second straight Rookie of the Week honors. Evans notched three goals and two assists with his third point of the game being the 300th of his career. Matt Vinc made 39 saves as Rochester moved into a second-place tie in the East with a 2-1 record.
