Resilient Jacks Down Ice Wolves, Earn Weekend Sweep

ODESSA, TX - It had been over two years since the Jackalopes swept an opponent on home ice. On Saturday night, the Jackalopes ended that drought as they defeated the New Mexico Ice Wolves 4-3 at the Ector County Coliseum.

The game started off well for the Jackalopes who capitalized on their first tow shots on goal in the opening minutes to take a 2-0 lead. Goals by Tyler German and Jack Musa (the first off a quick shot in the slot, the other off a deflection) put the Jacklalopes ahead early and the Ector County faithful on thier feet.

Odessa added on another goal off the stick of Joe Schubert from a low shot in the slot, Schubert with his first goal as a Jackalope put Odessa up 3-0 midway though the first period. The Jackalopes had a great chance to go up 4-0 on a heavy shot by Evan Orr but he stuck the outside of the post.

In the second the Ice Wolves bounced back with two goals in the middle period to claw thier way to 3-2. The Jacks had some good chances to try and extend their lead but Owen Parker, who had a tough start in net for New Mexico, bounced back well making several big stops to keep New Mexico within one.

In the third both teams exchanged back and forth chances before the Ice Wolves broke through on a power-play goal from a point-shot on the right side to tie the game at 3-3. But the Jackalopes soon had a power-play opportunity of thier own and they made the most of it. Just nine seconds into the man advantage, Jack Musa was able to get the puck in the far corner and sent a pass into the slot for a wide open Dayne Howard who one-timed the shot in past Parker to put Odessa back on top 4-3.

New Mexico unleashed a fury of chances in the final seven minutes but just like on Friday night, the Jackalopes defense did not allow many chances, those few shots that did get to the net, Cooper Black made the save. It was an emotional night for the Jackalopes and their fans who have not seen back-to-back victories on home ice since December of 2020 and a sweep of a weekend opponent since March of 2019. Black made 28 saves on 31 New Mexico shots to finish the weekend with 54 saves and five goals against en route to his first back-to-back wins this season.

Odessa, now on a two-game winning streak, will look forward to thier final home weekend of the 2020-21 campaign next weekend as they host the Wichita Falls Warriors at the Ector County coliseum on Friday and Saturday April 30 and May 1.
