Today's Game: The Reno Aces and Fresno Grizzlies open the 2018 Pacific Coast League season tonight and a five-game set at Greater Nevada Field. Right-hander Braden Shipley gets the ball for Reno against Fresno righty Mike Hauschild.
Top Prospects: The Aces have eight prospects on their Opening Day roster rated in the Diamondbacks top-30 prospects according to Baseball America. # 8 Taylor Clarke, #14 Jimmie Sherfy, #17 Jared Miller, #19 Socrates Brito, #22 Kevin Cron (DL), #24 Ildemaro Vargas, #26 Christian Walker, and #30 Michael Perez.
Shipley, Nevada's own: Reno Aces RHP Braden Shipley was the WAC Pitcher of the Year in 2012 and co-Pitcher of the Year in 2013 while with the Wolf Pack. Over 3 seasons with the Wolf Pack, he was 17-7 with a 2.79 ERA and ranks sixth in school history in strikeouts (203). Baseball America rated him as nation's 3rd-best college pitcher in the 2013 draft.
Aces Home Opener History: The Aces are currently 6-3 on Opening Day in team history. The Aces defeated the Fresno Grizzlies on Opening Day last season, 13-6, with Braden Shipley earning the victory.
Experience is Key: 20 players on Reno's Opening Day roster have Major League experience. All five infielders on the active roster have seen Major League time.
We're Back: 15 Aces return from the 2017 Northern Division Championship roster: Jake Barrett, Silvino Bracho, Jake Buchanan, Taylor Clarke, Joey Krehbiel, Jared Miller, Jimmie Sherfy, Braden Shipley, Michael Perez, Kristopher Negron, Jack Reinheimer, Ildemaro Vargas, Christian Walker, Socrates Brito and Jeremy Hazelbaker. Shipley enters his third consecutive year in Reno and Barrett returns for the fifth consecutive year.
Return of the MVP: Christian Walker returns to Reno after capturing the Pacific Coast League Most Valuable Player award in 2017. The Norristown, PA native launched a franchise-record 32 regular season home runs, drove in 114 and hit .309 in 133 games played. Walker earned a September call up and was featured on the D-backs playoff roster.
