
Reno 1868 FC to Travel to Sacramento for Donner Pass Derby

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The boys in blue will hit the road Saturday to head to Papa Murphy's Park and take on Sacramento Republic FC in this season's first Donner Pass Derby rivalry match. The two clubs will meet again three days later for the Second Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, also in Sacramento.
The Donner Pass Derby was officially named on August 15 of the 2017 season after a rivalry between the two clubs began heating up.
Past Matchups
When it comes to past regular season matchups, Reno leads the California club with three wins while Sacramento has one, though the two clubs have also tied once.
Previous Open Cup matches are a different story as Sacramento has defeated Reno twice in two different Third Round Open Cup matches.
The Details
Reno was undefeated against Sacramento in regular season play during the 2017 season. The clubs met for the first time in USL Championship history on June 10, 2017 at Greater Nevada Field where Reno won 2-0. Goals were scored in the 39th minute by former forward Antoine Hoppenot and the 73rd minute by former midfielder Matt Lagrassa.
The next match was on August 19, 2017 at Papa Murphy's Park in Sacramento. Reno won this match 2-1 with goals by former forward Dane Kelly in the 17th minute and former midfielder Chris Wehan in the 22nd minute. Sacramento's goal came in the 15th minute by midfielder Hayden Partain.
The clubs met for a third time in 2017 on October 14. This match was played at Greater Nevada Field and ended in a 2-2 draw after goals for Reno 1868 FC by Chris Wehan in the 41st minute and Antoine Hoppenot in the 51st minute. Sacramento's goals were both scored by Samuel Ochoa Oregal.
The dynamic switched up in the 2018 season when the clubs met twice and each got a win a piece. On May 12, Reno came back from being down 2-0, scoring three goals in five minutes to get the 3-2 win. Sacramento's goals were scored by Jure Matjasic in the 2nd minutes and Cameron Iwasa in the 12th. Reno's goals came in the 57th minute by former defender Paul Marie, the 59th minute by forward Brian Brown, and the 62nd minute by former forward Mo Thiaw.
The two teams met for a final time in 2018 on August 25 at Greater Nevada Field when Sacramento Republic got their first regular season win over Reno 1868 FC. Sacramento defeated Reno 2-1 after goals by Cameron Iwasa in the 47th minute and Wilson Kneeshaw in the 60th minute. Reno's lone goal came from Seth Casiple in the 47th minute.
This Week's Matchup
Saturday's match will kick-off in Sacramento at 7:30 p.m. Reno 1868 FC is coming off of a 2-2 draw against Tulsa Roughnecks FC from the weekend prior. Sacramento Republic FC is coming off of a 1-0 victory over Fresno FC from this past Wednesday night.
Reno's Brian Brown currently leads the squad with five goals so far this season while Sacramento's Cameron Iwasa also has five goals for his club.
