Renegades Trade For Two

August 20, 2008 - SPHL (SPHL)
Richmond Renegades News Release

The Richmond Renegades today sent speedy forward DONALD MELNYK to the Twin Cities Cyclones in a two for two player trade that saw the Renegades acquire two Slovakian brothers known as very solid defensemen; JOZEF and MARTIN KUBALIAK. High scoring forward RYAN WEBB was the second Renegades player sent to Twin Cities. Webb was acquired in the end of season Jacksonville dispersal draft and had not yet played in Richmond.

JOZEF KUBALIAK, a 6' 3" and 230# defenseman played in all 52 regular season games in his first SPHL season with the Cyclones in 2007-08 having 7 assists. During the season the tough, 26 year old stay at home defenseman accumulated 186 penalty minutes.

The Renegades will also welcome Jozef's younger brother and fellow defenseman, MARTIN KUBALIAK to the team. Martin, also 6'3" and 225#, was acquired by Twin Cities at the end of the 2006-07 season from Huntsville. That season he played in 51 regular season games scoring 5 goals and 17 assists to go along with his 143 PIM's. Last season, the 23 year old divided his playing time between Bakersfield Condors of the ECHL (14 games) and the Mississippi River Kings (3 games), Tulsa Oilers (23 games) and Wichita Thunder (17 games) all of the CHL. He played a total of 57 games last season scoring 2 goals and 6 assists to accompany his 117 PIM's.

MELNYK appeared in 49 games last season for the Renegades scoring 29 goals to go along with his 27 assists which included 6 power play goals and 6 short handed goals. In two playoff games he was held off the scoreboard. With Jacksonville last season, WEBB suited up for 50 regular games scoring 27 goals and 29 assists which included 5 power play goals and 2 game winning goals. In 8 playoff games he had 2 goals and 4 assists.

"When you go after quality players you need to give up quality players," stated Renegades President/GM, Allan B. Harvie, Jr. "Twin Cities was looking for scoring and Coach Goudie wanted to beef up our defense. Coach has had his eyes on the Kubaliak brothers for a while now so when we started negotiating with the Cyclones, that's who we wanted. These brothers have size and skill and can flat out play defense. They will really fit well in Coach Goudie's system. We've all greatly enjoyed having Mellie with the Renegades. He's given Richmond fans a lot of fun memories and we wish him continued success; except, of course, when he plays us!"

Renegades training camp starts Monday, October 13th with the regular season opening at home Friday, October 24th.
