Ottawa Renegades News Release

OTTAWA – The Ottawa Renegades are pleased to announce the team's coaching staff for the 2004 season, one that includes Gary Etcheverry as the team's defensive coordinator.

Etcheverry, a resident of South Gate, California (Los Angeles area), will begin his seventh season in the Canadian Football League.

After spending 16 years as a coach at various levels in the United States, Etcheverry moved to Canada in 1997 to become a defensive line coach for the Toronto Argonauts. He spent two seasons as the D-line coach in Toronto before being promoted to the defensive coordinator's position in 1999.

During the 1999 season under Etcheverry, the Argos led the CFL in 11 defensive categories and established itself as the top-rated defending unit in the league.

Following the 1999 season, Etcheverry moved to Western Canada where he became defensive coordinator for the Saskatchewan Roughriders for the 2000 season and for the B.C. Lions in 2001.

Etcheverry returned to Toronto as the Argos' head coach for the 2002 season.

The Renegades are also pleased to announce the addition of Jaime (first name pronounced HI-mee) Hill as defensive backs coach and Tommy Condell as quarterbacks and receivers coach.

Hill, a 40-year-old native of Bakersfield, California, brings an extensive resumé to Ottawa, with over 18 years on his coaching repertoire, including experience in the National Football League and the Xtreme Football League.

His most recent experience was with the Calgary Stampeders during the 2003 season, his first season in the Canadian Football League, as secondary coach.

Hill worked with the San Francisco 49ers under head coach Steve Mariucci in 1997 and 1998 as the team's defensive quality control coach and a secondary coach.

In the XFL, he served as a secondary coach in 2001 with the San Francisco Demons where he worked with Joe Paopao.

Prior to his move to Canada last year, Hill worked as the defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Humboldt State University (Arcata, California).

Hill, a wide receiver at San Francisco State from 1982-1985, began his coaching career in 1987 at his alma mater, guiding the receivers at San Francisco State.

He moved to the University of Texas – El Paso (UTEP) in 1988 as the team's graduate assistant. In 1989, Hill served as tight ends coach at Northern Arizona, followed by a two-year stint as secondary coach at Sonoma State. Hill moved to the University of Chicago to become the football team's defensive coordinator for the 1992 season before taking the defensive coordinator's position at Portland State University from 1993-1996.

Condell, 32, begins his second stint in the CFL after serving as special teams coordinator of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers during the 1997 season.

The native of Utica, New York, most recently coached for the University of Louisiana at Monroe where he served as offensive coordinator and quarterback coach during the 2003 season and special teams coordinator and tight ends coach in 2002.

Condell also held coaching jobs at Stephen F. Austin University (Receivers and pass game coordinator), McNeese State University (Tight ends coach, assistant offensive line coach), Hamilton College (wide receivers coach) and Illinois Wesleyan University (running back coach).

He also served as a personnel assistant in NFL Europe in 1998 and as a running backs and linebackers coach for the Albany Firebirds of the Arena Football League in 1996.

Etcheverry, Hill and Condell join the staff of Joe Paopao who begins his third season as head coach of the Renegades.

Also returning for their third seasons with the Renegades are assistant head coach and offensive line coach Kani Kauahi, and special teams coordinator Dave Easley.

"I am extremely pleased to announce our staff for the 2004 season," said Paopao. "These new additions to our staff will provide experience and background to compliment our existing staff of Kani, Dave and myself.

"I am confident that our entire staff has the right amount of experience and knowledge to prepare our players for what should be a very competitive season."
