Ottawa Renegades News Release
OTTAWA - Forrest Gregg, the Executive Vice President of Football Operations for the Ottawa Renegades Football Club, announced Monday that John Jenkins has been hired as the new head coach of the team and the second in the franchise's four year history.
"We believe that at this point in our history, we need somebody who can take us to the next level, first to the playoffs and then to the Grey Cup," said Gregg. "With John's extensive experience and specific talents we believe that he is that person."
Jenkins has had over 30 years in both coaching and player personnel. Gregg emphasized the range of experience the Renegades' new coach has; from being an offensive coordinator with five different CFL teams (including the 1997 Grey Cup champion Toronto Argonauts) to having been a record-setting head coach in NCAA football with the University of Houston Cougars.
He has worked with such legendary quarterbacks as Doug Flutie, Matt Dunigan and Jim Kelly, and is considered one of the most experienced and knowledgeable offensive minds in the game.
Additionally he has been a U.S. scout for six CFL franchises, including the Edmonton Eskimos and the Argonauts. Recently Jenkins has worked as the Director of U.S. Scouting for the Renegades since July, 2005.
"I am thrilled and humbled by the opportunity to be the head coach of the Ottawa Renegades," said Jenkins.
"I have always had a great respect for the great CFL traditions and championship teams that have been here in the past. I also understand that the fans of Ottawa are starved for a winning team and I am here today to commit that I will dedicate myself completely to returning that championship tradition to the Nation's Capital."
Ottawa Renegades President Lonie Glieberman, who joined Gregg and Jenkins at a media conference Monday stated: "We are very excited about having John Jenkins as our new head coach.
"John has a wealth of experience and success in our league as both a coach and a scout. His background as a former head coach in NCAA Division I football and other professional football leagues will allow him to recruit the absolute finest athletes available. With John at the helm, we believe we will quickly and dramatically improve our football team".
