Redfish Win Season Finale Against Peanuts

Charlotte County Redfish News Release

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL- The Charlotte County Redfish hoped to go out the same way they entered Paul Eames Sports Complex against the South Georgia Peanuts, with a win. The Redfish employed a short memory and another stellar outing by Ricardo Gomez, who fanned 10, to reel in a victory in the season and series finale 6-2.

The Redfish again went up early as Jared Williams singled to centerfield off Peanuts' starter Dumas Garcia (6-3). Williams moved all the way to third on two ground ball outs and came home to score on a RBI single ripped into rightfield by William Plaza to put the 'Fish up 1-0. As Plaza was making his turn around first, he went down and was cringing in pain and grasping his ankle. Plaza was carried off the field by his teammates with no further details given on the injury.

South Georgia came right back against Redfish hurler and July pitcher of the month, Ricardo Gomez. Curtis Goodwin ripped the first pitch he saw right back up the middle at Gomez. After a stolen base and a Joey Hooft ground out pushed Goodwin to third base, Mike Caruso, who hit the game-winning RBI single the night before, did it again with a flare into leftfield to tie the game at 1.

Gomez and Garcia matched each other in the 2nd working perfect innings but the Redfish got to Garcia again in the top of the 3rd. Jared Williams and Billy Hogan reached and were brought home as Aaron Simmons, who pinch-run and took at first after the William Plaza injury, hugged a double down the first baseline and the Redfish were up 3-1. Jason Hurst followed with a double off the base of the wall in centerfield and the Redfish took a 4-1 lead.

Gomez continued to pitch lights out as he no-hit and shutdown the Peanuts for the next 3 innings. Gomez picked up 4 strikeouts and even showed his range as he came off the mound to tag out Goodwin on failed a drag bunt attempt to end the 5th inning. The Peanuts notched their only other run of the game in the 5th inning as Brandon Woolard tripled to right field scoring Jasha Balcom to make it 4-2. Gomez then struck out 2 more and got Goodwin to groundout to Simmons. The Redfish hurler finished with 6.0 excellent innings with only 2 ER on 4 hits and only 1 free pass. He also struck out a single-game high with 10 Ks.

Charlotte County's bats didn't let up against Garcia or the Peanuts' defense. After Jared Williams walked, PJ Lehmann singled into shallow right that sent Williams to third base. Williams got into third base on high throw and Lehmann tried for second. Third baseman Steve Butler overthrew Joey Hooft allowing Williams to score and Lehmann to move to third on the error. Lehmann came home as Garcia's pitch went off catcher Nick Prosise's glove all the way to the backstop and the Redfish took a 6-2 lead.

This was the Redfish needed as the bullpen bounced right back as Andy Polk and Aaron Easton picked up where Gomez left off. Polk allowed a hit to Brandon Woolard but got Johnny Washington to ground into a fantastically turned 4-6-3 double play. Easton also allowed a man to reach but got a ground out and 2 fly-outs to centerfield including a phenomenal diving snag by Millard Dawson to end the 8th inning. Celson Polanco, who has struggled in his start in the series opener, worked out a jam as he came on to pitch the 9th inning. Doc Brooks, who struck out 3 times, notched his lone hit and Kyle Keen drew a walk, but this didn't faze Polanco. He got the next three batters to get under his pitches and fly-out to secure a Redfish victory.

The Redfish return to action and the Charlotte Sports Park to take in state rivals the Bradenton Juice in the conclusion of the "Sunshine State" Rivalry Series presented by Fairchild Roofing. The teams begin their series, which will feature 5 games in 3 days, with 2 7-innings games on Monday, August 6th.
