Redfish fall on rainy night in Georgia

June 30, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
Charlotte County Redfish News Release

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL- The Redfish just couldn't seem to ever get themselves going against the South Georgia Peanuts in the first two games of their road trip. With Tommy Sutton (0-1) on the hill, the Redfish hoped to right their ship, but Peanuts' southpaw, Dustin Taylor (5-1) continued to stifle the Redfish bats as the Peanuts took the series and downed the Redfish 14-2.

The Peanuts didn't make Sutton's first professional one to remember as South Georgia reached Sutton early and often. Jaysha Balcom and Joey Hooft came in to score on a RBI double off the bat of Tug Gillingham in the 1st inning. The Peanuts added 5 more in the 2nd including a 3-run homerun by Doc Brooks off the scoreboard in leftfield and took a commanding 7-0 and they didn't look back.

Sutton pitched in and out of several jams on the night, but the Peanuts drove the Redfish starter from the game after 3.2 innings. Sutton allowed 9 ER on 10 hits with 4 walks but got 2 big Ks in key situations. The Redfish found great relief from Aaron Easton, who bounced back from a poor outing in the first game. Easton threw 2.1 innings and only allowed 1 ER on 3 hits and 4 Ks.

The Redfish didn't go down without a fight and showed signs that this time is getting ready to strike in the second half of the season. Corece Lee doubled and came around to score on an Easton RBI single to right to break the shutout in the 6th inning. Jason Hurst, who continued to impress, singled to start the third and Erik Quarberg followed with a hard single to left. Taylor then threw two pitches that got past his catcher and the Redfish made the score 14-2. Any hopes of a miraculous comeback were quickly dashed as after Mike Muscato and PJ Lehmann reached on back-to-back 2 out singles in the 9th, Billy Kovatch grounded out to first to end the game.

The Redfish have an off day tomorrow and will look to start the month of the July on a winning note as they open up the 4th installment of the Sunshine State Rivarly Series, presented by Fairchild Roofing on Tuseday night, July 2nd. First pitch is set of 7:05 PM. All Redfish games can be heard on 1070 AM WKII and online at www.redfishbaseball.com. For more information, check out www.redfishbaseball.com.
