July 29, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
Charlotte County Redfish News Release

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL- The Charlotte County Redfish looked try and notch a win in the series finale against the South Georgia Peanuts. The Redfish got a phenomenal start from Ricardo Gomez but 2 errors in the first inning plated 3 runs and that was all the Peanuts needed to squeak out another close victory of the Redfish 3-1.

Gomez (2-2) came off his best outing of the season as he tossed 7 innings with 8 Ks in his last start and continued looked ot continue his dominant ways. Gomez set down the first two hitters he faced on a fly-out and strikeout, but Doc Brooks reached a ball that past shortstop Jose Gutierrez to continue the inning. Nick Prosise went right back at Gutierrez who misplayed the ball and put runners on the corners with 2 outs. This came back to haunt the 'Fish as Jasha Balcom reached on double to leftfield plating Brooks. After a Brandon Wooloard walk, Steve Butler brought home a pair on a single that landed in a left and got away from Jason Hurst and the Peanuts had a 3-0 lead.

The Redfish appeared that they'd respond quickly against Peanuts' starter Austin Weilep (9-1) as Jose Gutierrez put one past the third baseman Steve Butler in the bottom of the 1st. South Georgia catcher Nick Prosise though caught Gutierrez trying to steal second and Weilep got two fly balls out to end the inning.

Heading into the top of the 2nd inning, Manager Cecil Fielder went out to the field to find out that his shortstop Gutierrez was sent to the showers early for arguing a call in the field with base umpire Jim Clark. After Fielder got the explanation and the game continued, Gomez settled down and went on to set down 11 of the next 12 batters he faced. Gomez had 3 strikeouts in this stretch and picked up a pair in a 1-2-3 4th inning.

Against Weilep, the 'Fish had a piar of runners on base in both the 2nd and 4th innings with only 1 out. Weilep though retired the next two batters he faced in each occasion and kept the Redfish and their faithful frustrated. The frustration turned to confrontation as Millard Dawson leadoff the bottom of the 5th inning earning a walk. Dawson, who was sitting on 18 stolen bases, tried to make it 19 as he broke for second with Brad Thoma at the plate. On Prosise's throw down to second, it appeared that Dawson was there before Johnny Washington applied the tag, but the umpire Clark said the tag was in time. Fielder immediately came out to argue the call with Clark and was promptly ejected.

Gomez continued to dominate South Georgia and finished the night with 7.0 strong innings with 3 runs, none earned, on 4 hits. He also recorded 5 Ks and walked 5. The Redfish relief again got the job done as Aaron Easton picked up where Gomez left off. Easton faced 8 batters, inducing 2 fly ball outs and struck out 4 as he allowed no runs and only 1 hit in his 2 innings of work.

The lone Redfish run came across in the bottom of the 8th inning. Josh Murray walked and reached second on a passed ball and came across as Washington threw away a ground ball by Billy Hogan. The Redfish has the tying run at the plate for the second night in a row in the bottom of the 9th inning. After Jason Hurst reached on a infield single and was sacrificed over on a Millard Dawson bunt, Aaron Simmons pinch-hit but got under a pitch from Peanuts' closer Ja Jones as the Redfish fell in the finale 3-1.

The Redfish return to action at the Charlotte Sports Park on Monday, July 30th.
