Records fall as Barrage Defeat Boston, 29-20

Boston, MA- The Philadelphia Barrage, a Charter Member of Major League Lacrosse (MLL), defeated the Boston Cannons, 29-20, tonight at Nickerson Field in front of fans 5,612. It was a night of record breaking for the Barrage. After tonight Blake Miller has recorded 33 goals this season, breaking the record for number of goals set by a mid-fielder. The record was 32 goals set by Jay Jalbert of Long Island. The previous record for number of goals in a half was set by Baltimore on May 22, 2004 against Rochester in Seattle, WA, with 18 goals.

Philadelphia broke the record with 20 goals in the half, as well as setting the record for goals in a quarter with 12. The game also set a record for number of points scored in a game with 49; the earlier record was 43 points. Philadelphia was able to score 29 total goals, breaking the record for goals scored in a game by one team. Miller (6g, 1a), Springer (6g, 1a), Cromwell (4g, 3a), Boyle (3g, 4a), and Colsey (5g, 1 2-pt g, 1a) all tallied 7 points for the night.

Although Philadelphia got off to a slow start in the first quarter, not registering a goal until 9:40 on the clock, they were able to come back 9-8, Boston, by the end of the 15 minutes. The Cannons point leader, Conor Gill was the first to score a goal 44 seconds into the game. Michael Watson of Boston, who in the past two games has recorded 12 points, scored the second goal of the night with an assist from Gill. Ryan Boyle netted two goals for the Barrage, followed by a 2-point goal from Roy Colsey. Blake Miller scored twice, as well as a goal a piece from Matt Striebel and Keith Cromwell.

After the Barrage scored their fourth bounce shot of the night on Cannons Kevin O'Brien, newly acquired Trevor Tierney took the goal for Boston. Barely 19 seconds in the cage, Colsey fired a bounce shot past Tierney, making the score 12-9, Philadelphia. The Barrage was able to score 12 goals in the second quarter, creating a 20-15 score at the half. Colsey, Miller, and Michael Springer each notched 3 goals for the second quarter, while Boyle recorded 3 assists. Gill tallied 6 points (2g, 4a) for the Cannons during the first half, as well as Philadelphia's Miller tying the league record for most goals in a season for a mid-fielder with 32. He was named Bud Light MVP of the game.

Doug Shanahan added two assists to open up the second half on goals from Colsey and Springer. Striebel added his second goal of the night, before Miller would score again, giving him a total of 33 goals on the season. David Evans and Watson both scored for the Cannons, leaving the score at the end of the third, 25-18, Philadelphia.

Cromwell hit the back of the net twice in the beginning of the fourth with assists from Boyle and Striebel. Springer added his 7th point of the night, a career high, with 10:52 left in the half. Watson had Boston's lone two goals of the quarter. Boyle scored the last goal of the game for both teams, with an assist from Colsey.

After tonight, Philadelphia advances 4-5, while Boston falls 7-2. The Barrage will play the Baltimore Bayhawks away at Unitas Stadium, July 31 at 7:00 PM.
