Tulsa Talons News Release

Tulsa, OK- The Tulsa Talons of the arenafootball2 League have been assigned wide receiver / defensive back Shon King by the af2 League office, head coach Skip Foster announced today.

King had one of the best seasons in af2 history with the Quad City Steamwheelers in the league’s inaugural 2000 season. That year, he set the league record that still stands with 284 points on 47 total touchdowns (39 receiving, five kickoff returns, two rushing, and one fumble return) while helping the Steamwheelers to an undefeated 19-0 record and the ArenaCup 2000 championship. He was named the ArenaCup’s Most Valuable Player following the championship game where King caught six passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns. He also had two kickoff returns for scores and a missed field goal return for another touchdown.

“The Tulsa Talons are very excited to have Shon King with us,” said Foster. “We are 110 percent focused on winning the 2003 ArenaCup championship, and Shon is the type of player that will help us move in that direction.

He still holds the record for most touchdowns in a single game with eight, set on May 26, 2000. His 3,198 all-purpose yards in a single season ranks third in af2 history. During his record-setting season, King caught 136 passes (6th-most in af2 history) for 1,858 yards (3rd-most in af2 history) and 39 touchdowns (4th-most in af2 history). He was also a second-team all-af2 selection following the season.

Following his stellar 2000 season, King went on to play for the New York Dragons of the Arena Football League during the 2001 and 2002 seasons. The 6-0, 185 pound wide receiver / defensive back played in a total of 15 games in his two-year AFL career, catching 72 passes for 747 yards and 24 touchdowns on offense and totaled 18 tackles and one interception on defense for the Dragons.

“We’re expecting Shon to play wide receiver / defensive back and he will give us an added offensive weapon to go with our existing receiving corps,” said Foster. “Shon’s experience will give us an added dimension from somebody that has won an ArenaCup.

King and the rest of his Talons’ teammates will be hosting the Bossier City Battle Wings this Saturday night at the Tulsa Convention Center. The Talons (5-1) are in first place in the Central Division, while the Battle Wings (2-4) are in third place. Saturday’s game marks the return of Bossier City’ s quarterback Sherard Poteete to the Tulsa area. Poteete played high school ball at Tulsa’s Union High School. Poteete is the af2’s all-time rushing leader with 840 yards and the league’s second-leading passer with 8,969 yards.

King will be available for interviews and comments at the Talons’ scheduled media night tonight in Exhibit Hall B at the Tulsa Convention Center. Media are invited to come before practice at 5:30, or they can conduct interviews following practice around 8:30.

The Talons will also be welcoming WWE Superstars Bradshaw and Faarooq to Saturday’s game. They will sign autographs before the game and two lucky fans will have the opportunity to come down onto the field and participate in a halftime promotion with the APA Tag Team Duo.

Tickets for Saturday’s game are available at local Drug Marts, the Tulsa Convention Center Box Office, the Talons office, or by phone at 584-2000.
