August 28, 2016 - National Women's Soccer League (NWSL)
FC Kansas City News Release
Despite adding three Olympians back to the roster, FC Kansas City could not come up with a victory in its first game after the month-long 2016 Rio Olympic Games Break. The Blues surrendered a goal in the first and one in the second to fall 2-0 to the Boston Breakers at on Sunday at Swope Soccer Village. The loss dropped the two-time defending champions to 4-8-4 with 16 points and four games left in the regular season. FC Kansas City was still playing without bronze medalist Desiree Scott and head coach Vlatko Andonovski, who returned home to spend time with his family following the recent passing of his father. General Manager Huw Williams took his place on the sideline. Boston's Katie Schoepfer took a shot outside the box and buried it into the top corner of the net past the outstretched arms of Nicole Barnhart. It was Schoepfer's first goal of the season. She entered the game with 10 shots and four on goal. Former FC Kansas City player Kristie Mewis extended the lead with a goal in the 81st minute. Her first shot ricocheted off the crossbar and dropped straight down. She battled a few Blues defenders and collected the ball again to send it home. Her goal secured Boston's first road victory in two seasons. The Blues outshot the Breakers 17-14, but had fewer shots on goal. Nicole Barnhart finished with four saves and Jami Kranich had six. The Blues will play two of their final four games at home with Sky Blue FC coming to visit at 5 p.m. next Sunday. The game was originally scheduled for Children's Mercy Park, but was moved.
