Player of the Game: Ottawa’s Mat Giles scored four times to lead the Rebel to its first victory of the season.

Synopsis: The Ottawa Rebel won its first game of the season Saturday night in Uniondale, New York, downing the New York Saints 16-12 in front of 5,000 fans at Nassau Coliseum. Leading the way for Ottawa was attacker Mat Giles with four goals. “He was outstanding at both ends of the floor,” said Rebel general manager Lindsay Sanderson. “Mat did just about everything for us.”

Giles, 27 of Peterborough, scored six goals during two games for Ottawa this weekend. He scored twice during a 14-13 loss in Columbus on Friday afternoon.

Notable: The 16-goal outburst was Ottawa’s best performance of the season in three starts. The Rebel scored nine goals on Dec. 28 at home against Calgary and 13 times in Columbus on Friday … The Rebel have two straight wins in New York against the Saints. Ottawa beat New York 17-16 on March 23 during last season’s schedule … Orleans resident Kevin Dostie scored twice in his second NLL game. Dostie also netted a pair of goals during Ottawa’s loss in Columbus on Friday … Matt Disher played goal for the Rebel during Saturday’s game. On Friday, Andrew Leyshon handed the goaltending duty for Ottawa … Ryan Painter, who scored 45 goals for the Rebel last season, missed the last two games due to injury.
