It took RSL just under 30 minutes to get its first strike when MF Leighton O'Brien played a through ball to FW Jamie Watson who was taken down by the BYU defense on the edge of the box, but managed to slip the ball to Kreamalmeyer who nailed it into the back of the net in the 29th minute. Just six minutes later, Knowles picked up RSL's first card of the game when he went in for a hard tackle. The first half ended with RSL up by one.
BYU came out in the second half tying the game after BYU FW Matt Affleck played a through ball to BYU FW Chris Lamb who managed to slide the ball past GK Noah Palmer. Just seven minutes later, O'Brien picked up his first yellow card and then in the 62nd minute he was ejected after receiving his second yellow.
RSL scored its second goal off a free kick when FW Jordan Cila placed a perfectly taken cross into the box connecting with Knowles who headed it into the goal. Just two minutes later on an identical play, Cila crossed the ball into the box at it eventually landed at the feet of MF Kevin Novak who passed to Acosta who rocketed a shot into the net.
