Real Salt Lake News Release
SANDY, Utah (Tuesday, January 6, 2015) - Real Salt Lake announced on Tuesday that it has named Tyrone Marshall as an assistant coach under RSL head coach Jeff Cassar. Marshall will join the club immediately and will serve as RSL's main defenders coach.
"We're really fortunate to add somebody like Tyrone to our staff. His character is going to be excellent for our team and especially our defenders," Cassar said. "He had a very, very good career in MLS and he's a young, hungry coach who wants to prove himself. That's the kind of staff I want to have. With us moving Craig Waibel into the Technical Director role, it was important that I brought somebody in that held the same standards that Craig did and Tyrone fits that bill completely."
Marshall joins Real Salt Lake after 15 years in Major League Soccer as a player for five different clubs from 1998-2012. During his career he won MLS Cup twice, Supporters' Shield twice and the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup three times. He ranks 10th on the league's all-time list for games played, logging 337 career appearances with the Colorado Rapids (1998, 2011-12), Miami Fusion (1998-2001), LA Galaxy (2002-07), Toronto FC (2007-08) and Seattle Sounders FC (2009-2010).
He was drafted 11th overall by Colorado in the 1998 MLS College Draft after playing collegiately at Lindsey Wilson College and Florida International University. Midway through the season, he was traded to Miami, where he teamed with Cassar (1998-2001) and Assistant Coach Andy Williams (2000), along with Kyle Beckerman (2000-01) and Nick Rimando (2000-01). With the Fusion, Marshall collected his first trophy in MLS, winning the 2001 Supporters' Shield. In 2002, he won the Supporters' Shield and MLS Cup with the LA Galaxy while playing with Waibel. He would also win a double in 2005, hoisting the U.S. Open Cup and MLS Cup that year with the Galaxy, where he was also an MLS All-Star in 2003 and 2005.
After playing two seasons with Toronto FC, he again won championships with Seattle, lifting the U.S. Open Cup in 2009 and 2010 before a move to the Rapids for the final two years of his career.
In addition to his lengthy professional career, Marshall was also a fixture with the Jamaican National Team from 2000-2010, captaining the team in stretches on his way to 83 career caps.
Since retiring following the 2012 season, Marshall has worked extensively with youth soccer development in Lexington, Kentucky, and coached in the Premier Development League with the Derby City Rovers in 2014, serving as Head Coach and Technical Director.
"My family and I are very excited about the opportunity to join the RSL organization," said Marshall, 40. "The direction and vision that Jeff Cassar has created within the team is something I aspired to be associated with once given the opportunity to return to MLS."
Marshall joins a coaching staff under Cassar that includes Williams, Ted Eck and Daryl Shore.
