Real Salt Lake Announces 2010 Preseason Schedule

SANDY, Utah (Wednesday, January 27, 2010) - Real Salt Lake today announced the preliminary schedule for its 2010 preseason, which will take the squad from Utah to Arizona and then South Carolina in preparation for the beginning of its MLS Cup title defense on Saturday, March 27, at the San Jose Earthquakes. During the seven weeks of build-up to its 2010 campaign, Real Salt Lake is slated to play in six exhibition matches or scrimmages, with two contests set for its opening leg in Arizona during late February and four scheduled during its South Carolina stay in March - including a three-game run in the Carolina Challenge Cup tournament for a second straight preseason.

Real Salt Lake's preseason agenda will kick off in one week's time on Wednesday, February 3, when the squad will open up a weeklong "Rookie Camp" with entrance physicals and fitness testing. The camp, practices for which will be based at the Newpark Recreation Center in Park City (1456 Newpark Blvd.), will be mandatory for the squad's four 2010 MLS SuperDraft selections and optional for veteran members of the roster. All veterans and any trialists must report and receive physicals prior to Wednesday, Feb. 10 before Real Salt Lake holds a pair of full-sided practices at Newpark on Feb. 11 and the University of Utah's Spence Eccles Field House (650 Guardsman Way) on Feb. 12. Media availability for practices during the Feb. 3-12 period will be announced by the RSL Communications Department as soon as details are finalized.

Following the introductory period in Utah, Real Salt Lake will head south to Casa Grande, Ariz., where the Claret-and-Cobalt will call the Casa Grande Performance Institute at the Francisco Grande its home from Feb. 13-27. During the two-week stay at the resort located between Phoenix and Tucson, RSL will get a gauge of its assembled team via a "Claret v. Cobalt" intra-squad scrimmage on Feb. 17 before moving to the exhibition portion of its calendar against clubs from the professional ranks on Saturday, Feb. 20 and Friday, Feb. 26. Opponents, venues, start times, and public availability for those matches will be announced as details are finalized in the upcoming weeks.

After departing Arizona on Feb. 27, the squad will mix in some rest and additional practice sessions in Utah over the following five days before heading to the Atlantic Coast for a return trip to Charleston, S.C. from March 5-21. After taking on the College of Charleston in a scrimmage on Saturday, Mar. 6, the Claret-and-Cobalt will take to the practice field for a week before kicking off the defense of its Carolina Challenge Cup crown in the seventh annual version of the competition against the same field it competed against last year - MLS combatants D.C. United and Toronto FC and the host side, USSF Division 2's Charleston Battery. RSL's run in the tournament, which will be contested during three doubleheader sessions at the Battery's home of Blackbaud Stadium, begins on Mar. 13 against D.C. United and continues on Mar. 17 against Charleston before wrapping up with Toronto FC on Mar. 20, with all games set to kickoff at 3:00 p.m. MT (5:00 p.m. local).

Tickets for the 2010 Carolina Challenge Cup are on sale now, with single-day doubleheader tickets available for $15 (bleacher) and $25 (box) and the six-game full tournament package selling for $35 (bleacher) and $50 (box). Upon its return from South Carolina on Mar. 21, Real Salt Lake will practice the next week in Utah before beginning its 2010 regular season slate at the San Jose Earthquakes on Mar. 27, with kickoff from Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. set for 7:00 p.m. MT. Following another away clash at the Houston Dynamo five days later on Thursday, April 1 (7:00 p.m. MT, live on ESPN2), Real Salt Lake will begin the home portion of its 2010 schedule on Saturday, April 10, when Seattle Sounders FC makes its second-ever visit to Sandy for a 7:00 p.m. MT kickoff at Rio Tinto Stadium.
