Read to achieve week in the D-League

GREENVILLE, S.C., November 7 - Continuing its commitment to the local community, the NBA Development League is celebrating "Read to Achieve Week" in all eight markets as training camps get underway.

In an effort to help young people develop a love for reading and to encourage adults to read to children, the NBA, NBA D-League and WNBA have distributed more than half a million books and more than two million literacy magazines, as well as read to more than 500,000 children.

There have been 112 Reading and Learning Centers created nationwide in schools and community-based organizations. These places serve as a hub for programs and events that provide kids with greater access to books and technology. An additional 160 Reading Corners have been created throughout North America as well as in South Africa, Brazil, Argentina and China in an effort to provide young people and their families with greater access to reading materials and new technology.

The NBA's Read to Achieve program works year-round to reach more than 50 million children through Public Service Announcements, book fairs and community events.

Following is a rundown of the dates for each D-League market. All sessions are scheduled to include Read Aloud events with players, coaches and team staff, as well as basketball clinics and open practices for students from selected schools in each market.

The NBA Development League includes the Albuquerque Thunderbirds (N.M.), Arkansas RimRockers (Little Rock), Austin Toros (Texas), Fayetteville Patriots (N.C.), Florida Flame (Ft. Myers), Fort Worth Flyers (Texas), Roanoke Dazzle (Va.) and Tulsa 66ers (Okla.).

The D-League offers players the opportunity to develop their talent in a highly competitive atmosphere under the NBA's umbrella. Thirty-four (34) players have been called up to the NBA on 50 separate occasions. Eleven (11) former D-League coaches, six athletic trainers, 14 referees and 30 front office executives have also been called up since the start of the league's inaugural season in November 2001.

Designed to help grow the sport of basketball both domestically and internationally, the league also offers fun, family entertainment at affordable prices. The D-League is a source of on-court talent for the NBA's 30 teams and is a diverse human resources pool for the NBA and its teams by training employees in management, operations, public relations, sales and marketing positions.
