Rochester RazorSharks News Release
(Rochester, NY)...The Rochester RazorSharks (2-1) brought back exciting basketball back to the city of Rochester with a wild 115-108 win over the Reading Railers (1-2) in the RazorSharks 2008 Home Opener. The RazorSharks were able to extend their home winning streak to 36-0 at the Blue Cross Arena at the Rochester Community War Memorial, dating back to Thanksgiving night, November 24, 2005. This was the RazorSharks first home game, playing in front of 3,081 fans, since pulling out of the ABA playoffs last year. Vidal Massiah (St. Bonaventure) led the way with 28 points, 12 of those coming in the 4th quarter shooting 5-5 from the field and 12-18 for the game, shooting 3-4 from behind the arc.
The 1st quarter was all RazorSharks, as they closed out the quarter leading 28-22, not trailing once. However, the RazorSharks would lose a key component, when James Reaves came down hard early in the 1st quarter with a foot injury. He would come back to play the final 6:31 left in the quarter, but would not return.
In the 2nd, Tayron Thomas, of the Railers, led back the charge with a 3-pointer, capping off an 8-0 run with 8:51 left in the 1st half, as he went on to lead his team with 28 points and 6 assists. This gave the Railers their first lead of the game, 36-35, and they would end the half with a 51-49 lead, led at the half by Jerald Brown with 13 points.
The 3rd proved to be a topsy-turvy quarter for the two teams. Reading came out firing with a 14-1 run with 3:09 into the 3rd quarter. But with 5:17 left in the 3rd, the RazorSharks went on a 14-2 run bringing the deficit to three, 67-64 Reading. The charge was fueled by Keith Friel's 11 points aided by 3 3-pointers. Friel would finish the game, as the RazorSharks 2nd leading scorer with 19 points, 7-14 from the field and 4-8 from 3-point land. The RazorSharks would end the 3rd with an 81-79 lead.
Rochester would extend the lead to 103-94, in the 4th with 6:00 minutes to play off of Massiah's 3-pointer. However, Reading would climb back to within one, 103-102, with 3:27 left. This would be the last the RazorSharks would have to look over their shoulder, as they closed out the final 1:20 minutes, finishing off the game on an 8-3 run, and the 115-108 victory.
The RazorSharks come right back tomorrow with an early season division rematch with the Jacksonville Jam at 1:05pm (est.) at the Blue Cross Arena, following their 102-83 victory vs. the Jam on opening night.
