Rayford Poised to Tie Franchise Milestone
May 25, 2012 - Arena Football League (AFL)
Utah Blaze News Release
SALT LAKE CITY - When the Utah Blaze takes the field this Saturday against the San Antonio Talons, Caesar Rayford will rightfully put a stamp on his place in franchise history. Rayford is in line to tie a team record by playing in his 40th consecutive game - an achievement that has previously been reached only by WR Aaron Boone.
In today's AFL, achieving such a milestone is a difficult task. Of course, injuries are a significant factor when it comes to keeping players off the field. But at the same time, the Arena Football League's standard one-year contract leaves uncertainty as to which team a player will suit up for on a season-to-season basis. Players no longer sign long-term deals that insure multiple-year tenures with one team.
Take these factors into consideration, and Caesar Rayford's achievement speaks volumes to his dedication and loyalty to the Blaze organization, as well as his longevity on the playing field. On the same note, Utah has clearly committed to a player it views as a franchise cornerstone.
"Caesar Rayford has been a productive player for us for the past few seasons," said President & Head Coach Ron James. "He's one of the hardest workers on the team and prepares his mind and body well every week. That ability to focus and stay healthy has led him to success in this league, including his selection last year to the All-Arena team."
"I thank the Blaze organization for letting me a part of the best franchise in the AFL," said Rayford. "Coach James has challenged me every day and made me better. He pushed me and coached me into the player that I am today."
Rayford has without a doubt left his mark on the Blaze organization. In three seasons, he's become the most productive pass rusher in franchise history. Rayford set the team's all-time career record by recording 20.5 sacks during his three seasons donning the orange and black.
After graduating from the University of Washington in 2008, Rayford signed with the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League. He broke into Arena Football the following season and won an af2 Championship as a member of the Spokane Shock in 2009.
The 2010 season marked Rayford's first year with the Blaze. He enjoyed a solid inaugural campaign with the organization, as he led the team with 5.0 sacks. However, Rayford's most productive year came in 2011 when he earned first-team All-Arena honors while delivering 10.0 sacks. A standout on special teams, Rayford also tied for second in AFL single-season history with five blocked kicks.
Rayford's record continues to grow this season. In seven games, he's posted 5.5 sacks to rank seventh in the Arena Football League while also earning Riddell Defensive Player of the Week accolades for a 3.0 sack performance against the Iowa Barnstormers. Despite his individual achievements, Rayford's focus remains on one goal.
"Utah has become my home and the people here are truly first class," said Rayford. "I want to thank the fans and the Blaze community by bringing not one, but multiple championships to Salt Lake City!"
