Ray Miron Presidents' Cup Game 3 Recap
Published on May 7, 2014 under Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
The Allen Americans earned the win in a hard-fought Game 3 on Wednesday topping the visiting Denver Cutthroats 3-1. The Americans grab a 2-1 series lead with the next two games in Allen giving them a chance to win the Cup on home ice.
The Americans jumped on the board first with a blast from the right point off the stick of Daniel Tetrault. The one-timer was set up on a nice feed from Jamie Schaafsma from behind the net. For Tetrault, it was his first goal since the very first game of the post-season against Brampton.
Denver would tie things up rather quickly, less than two minutes after Allen's score, on a play that started and ended with a great effort from Kyle Fletcher. The forward outworked an Allen defenseman to keep the puck in the offensive zone before finding a loose puck in the slot that he backhanded up and over goalie Bryan Pitton. It was Fletcher's third goal of the post-season assisted by Garett Bembridge and Steve Kaunisto.
The Cutthroats outshot the Americans 13-10 in the period with the scoring knotted up at one goal apiece.
In the second period, the Americans carried play for the first half of the period against what appeared to be a flat Cutthroats squad. Allen had a pair of power plays and generated some chances but the game remained tied.
Towards the end of the period, the teams started losing patience and penalties were called eventually leading to a stretch of 3-on-3 hockey but once again, the net remained clear.
Allen outshot the Cutthroats 13-9 in the period.
The play stayed in the offensive zone for the Americans fort a good portion of the third period as well but Denver's Kent Patterson made numerous great saves keeping his team in it but at the 14:18 mark, Greger Hanson used a burst of speed to get past the back of the net and wrap around a shot by Patterson. For Hanson, it was his seventh goal of the post-season assisted by the defense duo of Mike Berube and Ross Rouleau.
Kale Kerbashian added an empty-net goal sealing the win for the Americans and the series lead. It was his first goal of the playoffs.
Allen outshot the Cutthroats 37-29 in the game as Denver mustered just 16 shots in the final two periods combined. Patterson finished the game with 34 saves and gave his club a chance but it wasn't enough. Pitton earned the win with 28 saves.
Game 4 is set for Friday night at the Allen Event Center.
