Ray Miron President's Cup Finals Going the Distance
April 28, 2004 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
The 2003/2004 Ray Miron President's Cup championship trophy will be presented tonight, as the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs visit the Laredo Bucks and a sold out (8,002) Laredo Entertainment Center for Game Seven of the series. Three times previously in CHL/WPHL finals history a deciding seventh game has been required, with the home club winning twice. A Mudbugs victory would give them their fourth franchise title, and first as a member of the Central Hockey League, while Laredo is bidding to become the first club in CHL/WPHL finals history to claim a championship after facing a 3 games to one deficit.
Tuesday evening, Laredo posted a 5-1 home win in front of a capacity crowd to force the required seventh game, and tonight's contest is already sold out, after selling nearly 4,000 tickets after the completion of Game Six. Through six finals games, crowds at the Laredo Entertainment Center and the CenturyTel Center in Bossier-City are averaging 6,766 as the CHL's top two clubs stage arguably the best series in league history. With tonight's sell-out, the CHL will complete the post-season with an average playoff attendance of 4,826.
The Championship trophy has twice been ready for presentation in the series after Bossier- Shreveport won Games Two, Three and Four to take a 3-1 series lead. In Bossier-Shreveport Sunday, Laredo scored the first goal of the game for the first time in the series, and emerged with a 4-2 win. After a 600 mile journey back to south Texas, Laredo again avoided elimination last night, posting a 5-1 win to set up this evening's one-game, winner take all match.
"This series has quite simply showcased the very best the Central Hockey League has to offer," said CHL President Brad Treliving. "We are very fortunate to be witnessing two outstanding teams, two tremendous organizations and two of the most supportive and loyal fan bases anywhere in the country."
Live audio and video of tonight's championship deciding game is available online by visiting CHLTV.com, home of the Central Hockey League's pay-per-view service. The Central Hockey League is currently completing its' 12th season of play, and again led all North American minor pro "AA" leagues in average attendance during the regular season, welcoming an average of 4,501 fans during the 2003-2004 campaign.
