San Jose Giants News Release

The San Jose Giants' bid for a third straight win over Visalia fell short with a 13-1 loss to the Rawhide on Friday evening at Excite Ballpark. After a thrilling extra-inning victory the previous night, the Giants managed only four hits and saw Visalia score 11 times over the sixth, seventh and eighth to break open a close game en route to the convincing win. The loss matched San Jose's (48-37, 8-11 second half) largest margin of defeat this season.

The only Giants run of the contest came in the bottom of the first inning on a leadoff home run from Grant McCray. The 400-foot drive to deep right was McCray's 14th homer of the year and it gave San Jose a 1-0 lead.

Eric Silva started on the mound for the Giants and began his night with two scoreless innings. Silva picked-off a runner to get through the top of the first and used a double play to work around a pair of walks in the second. He then quickly retired the first two batters of the top of the third before running into trouble. Rawhide leadoff hitter Juan Corniel singled with two down and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Alvin Guzman then came through with an RBI single as Corniel scored to tie the game. After Guzman stole second, Junior Franco clubbed an RBI double to deep left giving Visalia a 2-1 lead.

Silva finished his outing with a 1-2-3 top of the fourth before Melvin Adon tossed a scoreless fifth in the first appearance of his rehab appearance. However, San Jose offensively was held without a hit from the second through the fifth innings by Rawhide starter Yilber Diaz and still trailed by a 2-1 margin.

Back-to-back home runs by Visalia in the top of the sixth then extended the Rawhide lead. With Esmerlin Vinicio on the mound, Deyvison De Los Santos singled with two outs before Jacen Roberson hit a two-run homer down the left field line. Sergio Gutierrez followed with another home run as the Rawhide stretched their advantage to 5-1.

Visalia then blew the game wide open with back-to-back four-run frames in the seventh and eighth. Still facing Vinicio, the Rawhide knocked out five straight hits - three singles, one double and another single - to begin the top of the seventh. Four of the runners would eventually score with Guzman providing a two-RBI double and Franco a two-run single to make it 9-1.

An inning later, Visalia batted around against Hunter Dula scoring four runs on five hits. Back-to-back one-out RBI singles from Guzman and Franco and a two-run double from Roberson later in the inning pushed the margin to 13-1.

The Rawhide trio of Guzman (3-for-5, 2B, 4 RBI), Franco (3-for-5, 2B, 4 RBI) and Roberson (2-for-4, 2B, HR, 4 RBI) combined to drive in 12 of the 13 Visalia runs.

Diaz earned the win after tossing 5 2/3 innings with only one run allowed. He gave up three hits, walked three and struck out eight.

The Giants managed only two hits after the first inning - a single from Carter Williams in the bottom of the sixth and a single off the bat of Aeverson Arteaga in the eighth.
