Rascals Drop Series against Evansville
May 27, 2016 - Frontier League (FL)
River City Rascals News Release
The River City Rascals were unable to win their third consecutive series as the Evansville Otters scored six unanswered runs to defeat the Rascals, 6-1 Thursday night at CarShield Field.
Although the Rascals were able to figure out Otters starter Derrick Panilla early recording four hits in the first two innings, only one resulted out of it and that would be the only run to cross the plate in the series finale for the Rascals.
In the opening frame, Dominique Taylor picked up his tenth leadoff hit of the year but was retired a few pitches later attempting to steal second. After Rascals starter Zeb Sneed held the Otters off the board in the second, Robbie Enslen and Griff Gordon put together back-to-back singles and a successful double steal put two runners in scoring position with no outs for Kyle Gaedele. The DH delivered with a RBI ground out scoring Robby Enslen and the Rascals gave Sneed a 1-0 lead.
That lead didn't last long as the Otters tied the game with a RBI single from Frontier League player of the week Nick Balog before a line out ended the frame.
The Otters would record two more hits off of Sneed in the fourth but a double play ball kept the game tied between the western division opponents.
Similar to the fourth inning, the Otters recoded two hits in the fifth but they were both home runs by Dane Phillips and Balog putting the opponent up by three and they would hold the lead the rest of the game.
In the seventh, manager Steve Brook called upon lefty Vin Roth with one out and a runner on second. Roth allowed a RBI single to Dane Phillips and then allowed two more runs to come home to score as the Otters capped off their seven run night scoring on a wild pitch.
Sneed took the loss, allowing four runs on 10 hits and struck out two in his second professional start since 2012.
Offensively, the Rascals put together a pair of singles with two outs in the seventh, including one from Josh Silver, who leads the league with a .487 batting average and had two hits on the night.
River City looks to get back on track tomorrow against the Normal Cornbelters at CarShield Field with first pitch at 6:35.
