Tennessee Valley Raptors News Release
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. â The Tennessee Valley Raptors have added a new quarterback, the offensive line is also getting a boost and now there's a little more depth at wide receiver.
Raptors coach Dick Adams has signed former Western Connecticut State quarterback Mike Scipione â a one-time backup to Tim Couch at Kentucky -, offensive lineman Joel Page out of William Jewell College and former Northern Michigan multi-threat receiver Jamone Mims.
Adams said the late additions were definitely a plus as his team enters its final week of practice before opening the United Indoor Football season at Evansville next Saturday night.
"These three guys bring a lot to the table and we're only going to get better,'' Adams said. "We're a little more stable at quarterback now and the same goes for the offensive line and our receivers.
"Scipione is tall, mobile and can see the field well. Joel is just solid up front and Mims can hurt you in a number of ways, whether it's catching passes or returning kicks."
Scipione (6-foot-6, 240 pounds) backed up Couch at Kentucky in 1998 before moving on to a record-breaking three-year career at Division III WCS, where he threw for 5,625 yards and 58 touchdowns through three seasons. He set school marks for passing yards in a game (477) and season (2,372) as a senior, and threw a record 26 touchdowns as a junior on his way to setting the WCS career mark.
Page (6-3, 321) was a four-year starter for NAIA William Jewell and anchored an offensive line that led the Heart of America Athletic Conference in rushing in 2004. He was named the team's Offensive Player of the Year and earned first-team All-Conference and Honorable Mention All-American honors last season.
Mims (5-7, 162) was Northern Michigan's leading receiver in his 2000 senior season, earning all-conference honors after catching 50 passes for 645 yards and four touchdowns. He averaged 21.75 yards on kickoffs and 16.3 yards on punt returns over his two-year career.
