Marquette Rangers News Release
Marquette - Marquette Rangers goaltender Kevin Kissaw turned aside all 40 Alpena shots he faced Friday night at Lakeview Arena; as Marquette beat the Alpena IceDiggers 3 - 0 in North American Hockey League action.
It was Kissaw's second consecutive shutout as the Rangers improved to 8 - 1 on the season, and maintained their lead over Traverse City for first place in the NAHL North Division.
"Kevin's been a rock all season," said Rangers head coach Kenny Miller. "We've said it all along he gives us a chance to win every night, and tonight was no different. He was huge when they had some quality chances against us; he made the big saves and really gave our guys a lot of confidence as the game went on."
"It was a big win for us, but we know we'll get another good effort from them Saturday so we'll need to be ready to go again. It's a long season, we still have 49 games left so even though we're off to a good start I think if we keep our heads and play the game we're playing and don't look ahead we can be successful."
After a scoreless first period, Garrett Ladd opened the scoring at 16:41 of the second when he picked the pocket of an Alpena defender at the Rangers blue line and skated in shorthanded on IceDigger goalie Marcus Wieser. His backhand found the back of the net for Ladd's fifth goal, his 13th point and a 1 - 0 Marquette lead.
Wieser finished the night with 20 saves on 22 attempts by Marquette on the night.
Marquette native Collin Saint-Onge made it 2 - 0 on an assist from Scott Henegar when he pulled a loose puck off the near boards and fires a low slapshot past Wieser with 56 seconds remaining in the period.
Brent Bain added an empty netter with ten seconds left in the third for the final score.
The two teams meet again Saturday night at Lakeview Arena, faceoff is at 7:30.
