Marquette Rangers News Release
The Marquette Rangers continue their preparations for the upcoming 2006/07 season with one remaining open try-out camp. Following the camp in Detroit (June 23-25), community members will have the opportunity to join in watching the team formation July 6-9, at the Berry Events Center. The draft selections, tenders, free agents and invitees from the open try-outs will come together for the first time, competing to secure positions on the 23-player Rangers' roster.
"Although we have tendered 12 players and drafted five in the NAHL Draft, the opportunity to make our team remains wide open. Players are invited to the Invitational Camp by different methods, but in the end the best 23 players will call themselves Rangers," said Head Coach Leigh Mendelson. "We will field the best team we can to compete in the NAHL. After all, we're representing the greater Marquette community and the Upper Peninsula as a whole and we want our fans to have something to cheer about."
The Rangers' schedule is expected to be released by the end of June. The regular season will begin at the NAHL Showcase in Blaine Minn., September 13 and close April 1, 2007. The Rangers will first play on home-ice tentatively September 23, against the Alpena Ice Diggers. There will be 29 home and 33 away games, traveling as far as North Dakota. Marquette is one of the three Michigan based NAHL teams and according to Matt Mackinder of Michigan Hockey, "All three are expected to make an immediate impact (in the NAHL)."
The NAHL Board of Governors defined their thoughts on the Rangers' dedication and professionalism last week. During the NAHL Commissioner's board meeting in Denver, Col., David Saint-Onge was elected to the NAHL Executive Committee. "This is a great opportunity to become involved in a dynamic and ever-changing organization, but a responsibility I don't take lightly," Saint-Onge said. "I think it's a testament of acknowledgment from our partners in the NAHL. We will endeavor to make the NAHL stronger, more effective and a great venue for players to showcase their talents."
The Rangers' organization has been evaluating applicants for the assistant coach position. A decision is expected to be made and announced within the next few weeks regarding the selection.
Fans can look forward to meeting the faces behind the Rangers' organization soon thru a featured series called, "Meet the Rangers." This will allow introduction of the Rangers' staff to the community on a weekly basis, followed by the players starting in early September.
Team apparel is now available to purchase at Johnson's Sport Shop and online at: www.marquetterangers.com. Also available on the website is information on how to reserve season tickets, to ensure the best seat selection.
