Marquette Rangers News Release
Boardman, Ohio - The St. Louis Bandits have won the North American Hockey Leagues' Robertson Cup Championship the past two seasons. The Bandits are again the top team in the NAHL in 2008 - 09, and continued their league-leading ways Friday night at the NAHL North Division Showcase by downing the Marquette Rangers by a final of 4-0.
St. Louis (17-5-2, 36pts.) is a member of the NAHL South Division this season, but the Bandits were in the North Division when the brackets for the North Division Showcase were set last year; so it was decided that they would remain in the event for this season.
The Bandits opened the scoring at 9:19 of the first period on an even strength goal by Daniel Olszewski and never looked back. Former Traverse City North Star forward Clinton Bourbanais and Craig Kitto picked up the assists on the goal.
St. Louis added another first period goal from forward Andrew Hamburg, and two more even strength goals in the second period to jump out to a commanding 4-0 advantage after 40 minutes.
Dan Sullivan stopped 32 of 36 St. Louis shots in a losing effort for Marquette, while his counterpart Keith Kincaid made 34 saves in the shutout to improve his record to 10-4-1 on the season.
Neither team would score on the power play as Marquette went 0 for 8 with the man advantage; St. Louis was 0 for 5 with the extra skater.
With the loss, Marquette (9-11-4, 22pts.) falls into a fourth place tie in the NAHL North Division with the Alpena IceDiggers who defeated Motor City Friday by a final of 1-0.
The Rangers now play the host team the Mahoning Valley Phantoms tonight at 7:15 PM while St. Louis will face Motor City at 4:00 this afternoon. Mahoning Valley defeated Traverse City Friday 3-2 to take over sole possession of first place in the division with 30 points.
