Grand Rapids Rampage News Release
GRAND RAPIDS - A key member of the Grand Rapids Rampage coaching staff that helped lead the team to the 2008 American Conference Championship will be back behind the bench in 2009. The Rampage re-signed Ron Selesky today to return as the team's defensive coordinator and director of player personnel next year. He will join Steve Thonn, head coach and director of football operations; Darrin Kenney, offensive and defensive line coach; and Paul Reinke, special teams and fullbacks/linebackers coach; for a second year in Grand Rapids.
"Ron is a relentless worker whose preparedness and knowledge of Arena Football makes our team stronger," said Thonn. "He brings an upbeat demeanor and personality that is appreciated by players and coaches alike."
Selesky was assigned the difficult task of building a roster nearly from scratch last season, as only five members of the 2007 Rampage squad returned to the team in 2008. Over the course of the year, Selesky continued to tinker with the lineup to fill gaps and replace injured players, eventually settling on a unit that won five games in a row and carried Grand Rapids to the conference championship.
"Ron has so many contacts and knows just about every player out there," added Thonn. "To have a coach who can find players who best fit into our system is such a benefit."
The Rampage defense also improved under Selesky, playing its best in the Arena Football League's postseason. Grand Rapids surrendered a league-best 41 points per game in its first two playoff outings, and allowed only 260.7 yards per game, the second fewest among AFL postseason teams leading up to ArenaBowl XXII.
Selesky and the Rampage will continue to work to re-sign key members of their 2008 roster before August 10, when all unsigned players become free agents. The official start to the 2009 free agent signing period will be announced later this summer.
