Rampage Inks Former AFL Ironman of the Year
March 24, 2006 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Grand Rapids Rampage News Release
The Grand Rapids Rampage has announced the signing of 2001 AFL Ironman of the Year, two-time All-Arena First Team and All-Ironman Team selection WR/DB Dameon Porter.
This latest move sees Porter (6'01," 180 lbs., Wayne State) reuniting with Rampage assistant head coach/defensive coordinator Stan Davis who coached him in Chicago (2001-03) and Las Vegas (2005).
Over his eight-year AFL career, Porter is one of just four players in AFL history with at least 30 career receiving touchdowns and 30 interceptions. The other 30-30 club members include Barry Wagner, Carlos James and Randy Gatewood. Porter's career also includes 211 receptions for 2,831 yards with 53 touchdowns on offense and, on defense, he has posted 204.5 tackles, 64 pass breakups, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and 30 interceptions for 256 yards with two scores.
In 2006, Porter is currently tied for second in the AFL in pass breakups (13) and has 36.5 stops and two interceptions in eight previous games played with Las Vegas.
Porter was named the 2001 AFL Ironman of the Year and AFL Breakout Player of the Year after tying a then AFL record 12 interceptions on defense and offensively posting 53 catches for 865 yards and 17 touchdowns. The following season, he had 10 interceptions and with 17 total touchdowns to earn back-to-back All-Arena First Team honors.
Porter recorded his first career receiving touchdown against the Rampage in 2000 from Tommy Maddox and has the honor of the first touchdown pass in Chicago Rush history, which was an AFL record-tying 49-yard strike from former Rampage QB Jeff Loots.
To make room for Porter on the roster, the Rampage placed OL/DL Colin Bryant on injured reserve. Bryant tore his ACL after making a spectacular interception in the Rampage 59-49 win last week against Utah.
The Rampage plays one of Porter's former teams this Sunday, March 26 when it travels to the Windy City to take on the Chicago Rush. Kickoff is slated for 3:00 p.m. ET. The game can be seen on Fox Sports Detroit and heard on WBFX 101.3 FM - the Fox.
All Rampage home games are played at Centennial Wireless Field at Van Andel Arena. Tickets are available through StarTicketsPLUS (1.800.585.3737), all Michigan Meijer locations, at The Zone (located on the west side of Van Andel Arena) or by clicking here. Tune in on WOOD-TV channel 8 (NBC) in the Grand Rapids area all season long for the Rampage's drive to ArenaBowl XX.
