Grand Rapids Rampage News Release

Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Grand Rapids Rampage of the Arena Football League announced today the signing of Defensive Specialist Derek Stingley to a two-year deal.

Stingley (6-0, 195, Triton), a six-year veteran of the AFL, recently completed the 2002 season with the Arizona Rattlers. The former All-Arena selection played in four regular-season games for the Rattlers, recording 13.5 tackles and 11 defended passes. During the Rattlers playoff run, Stingley broke up 11 passes and recorded five total tackles, including four in Arena Bowl XVI.

"Derek is an immediate upgrade to our need area," said Michael Trigg, Rampage head coach and director of football operations. "Stinger gives us one of the better defensive backs in AFL history, and a leader that we were seeking. We are happy to have signed an anchor for our 2003 defensive unit."

Prior to joining the Rattlers, Stingley, the son of former New England Patriots receiver Darryl Stingley, spent the 2001 season with the Chicago Rush. In his only season in Chicago, Stingley led the Rush in tackles with 59.5 and finished second on the team in kick returns with 29 for 537 yards and a touchdown. The Rush acquired Stingley via free agency from Albany, where he played from 1996 to 2000. While with the Firebirds, he recorded a total of 262.5 tackles and 14 interceptions.
