Rainmen Sign Head Coach

(Halifax, NS) The Halifax Rainmen are pleased to announce the hiring of Josep Claros "Pep" Canals as Head Coach for the 2011-12 NBL Canada season.

"We are extremely excited about having Pep on board this season. He came highly recommended to us by some of the best basketball minds in the business," said Halifax Rainmen President & CEO, Andre Levingston. "His international experience and his knowledge of FIBA rules will serve as an advantage to our organization and to our players."

Canals began his coaching career in 1993 when he served as Assistant Coach at Northeast Missouri St. University (NCAA). Since then, he has served as head coach for the El Slavador national team, American University PR (NCAA), and has held some of the most prestigious coaching positions in Europe; largely in his home country of Spain, where he has enjoyed tremendous success of coaching some of the best basketball players in the world.

Throughout his career, Canals has coached his various teams to the finals eight times, and has won championships in Puerto Rico and Spain. He has also won the titles of All-Portuguese TMN Co-Coach of the Year in 2005 and All-Central American and Caribbean Games Best Coach in 2010.

Canals will be joining Levingston in Toronto at the NBL Canada draft and combine later this week. In October, a press conference will be held to officially introduce and welcome Canals to the city of Halifax.
