Rainiers Drop Father's Day Matinee
June 19, 2022 - Pacific Coast League (PCL)
Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers (26-39) were defeated 12-1 by the Sacramento River Cats (27-39) in front of 6,926 fans on a sunny Father's Day afternoon. It was the final game of a six-game series, with each team winning three.
Rainiers LHP Austin Warner ran into trouble in the first and second innings, but escaped with the help of two double-plays turned by the Tacoma defense, which extended a streak of errorless innings to 72 (snapped in the fifth).
Sacramento infielder David Villar got the scoring started in the top of the third. He lined a double down the line in left, scoring Steven Dugger. The RBI was Villar's 51st, the second-most of any player in the PCL.
The River Cats blew it open with home runs in the fourth and fifth innings. In the top of the fourth, Will Wilson doubled to the left-center gap, scoring Isan Diaz from first (walk). The next two batters reached, loading the bases for Dugger, who slugged a ball over the fence in right for a grand slam, extending the Sacramento lead to six. With two on and one out in the fifth, Ka'ai Tom homered to right, making it a 9-0 game.
In the seventh, the River Cats increased their advantage to double digits on an RBI fielder's choice by Bryce Johnson. Diaz then extended the lead to 11-0 with an RBI single in the eighth, and Wyatt Mathison added on another run in the top of the ninth with a sacrifice fly to center.
RHP Tristan Beck, Sacramento's starter, entered the game with an 0-5 record and an 8.65 ERA, but dramatically outperformed those numbers in Sunday's outing. Beck went seven innings, shutting out the Rainiers while allowing only three baserunners, one of which was eliminated on a caught stealing. The 25-year-old was rewarded with his first career Triple-A winning decision.
Sam Haggerty broke the shutout in the bottom of the ninth for Tacoma by hammering a ball to right, his sixth homer of the season. Tacoma could not tack on any more runs and fell 12-1.
Rainiers pitchers allowed 14 free baserunners (nine walks, three hit by pitches and two errors), eight of which came in to score.
Tomorrow is a travel day for the Rainiers, who will kick off a six-game series in Texas against the Sugar Land Space Cowboys (Houston Astros) on Tuesday at 5:05 p.m. PST. RHP Darren McCaughan will start for Tacoma, coming off a 7.1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 11 K performance earlier on this homestand (6/15). The journey to the Houston area is the longest trip of the year for the R's.
